Sports enthusiasts watch the games, buy the apparel and cheer on their favorite players; much like in professional sports. But there is one big difference between college and professional athletes. Many athletes are in college because they want a college degree. The main point of college is to go and get a degree. Nowadays a college degree is needed to hold a decent job, not every athlete goes on to become a professional so they need a degree for their future. New York Magazine affirms that college athletes understand the importance of receiving a college degree for their future. And the few that are capable of playing professionally understand they need a degree as a fallback, in case they are not able to become a professional athlete (Chait). If athletes are paid then they will worry more about the sport they are being paid for then their classes which they have to pay for. After reading the assigned material for this week, I do not think that athletes should receive money for playing NCAA sports. In the article, “US College Connection”, Posnanski reports all of the incentives that college athletes are given. For example, NCAA athletes are provided with free tuition, room and board, access to exceptional facilities, and the best coaches and doctors. The list continues on. If the system were to start paying athletes for participating in sport, it brings up several questions of where this money would come from and if all college athletes would get paid commission.…

Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

Due to NCAA rules, athletes have not been allowed compensation for their participation in college athletics. This rule has caused a great divide and debate within the collegiate sport world, especially with the recent exponential growth of college athletics. For instance, college sports critics Val Ackerman and Larry Scott argue “that college is ultimately about getting a degree and getting ready for life long after their playing days are over” supporting their claim that college athletes should not be paid (Ackerman and Scott). Opposing that view is the idea that college athletics offer exactly those benefits and more, which would be maximized with payment. As of right now, college athletes are being compensated through scholarships that average…

Many Division 1 athletes can receive up to $60,000 multiyear scholarships and some Division 2 athletes can receive partial scholarships. They are getting these scholarships to help pay for an education because most of them can’t afford to go to a Division 1 or Division 2 school. Also these players are bringing in money for their schools by TV contracts, advertising, merchandising and ticket sales. The top men’s basketball and football teams can bring in about $140 million a year and by doing that, it can help them have those scholarships. Another reason I don’t think that college athletes should get paid, is because they are getting a free education…

Even though people argue that college athletes should get paid money it will most likely never happen because of many reasons. One main reason is that if college athletes begin getting paid this will destroy something that is an honorable quality of many athletes and it is that they play for the love of their sport. College athletes should not begin getting paid because this will make more people play because they want to have a payday. This would be terrible because people and students need to play because they love their sport and they want to continue playing it, not because they will get a paycheck for playing it.…
