Analysis: Why College Athletes Should Be Paid

As each academic year goes by, fans of each team are able to enjoy another NCAA Basketball Tournament and football season. Most would agreeably say that the NCAA has competitive sports as popular as professional teams. College football and basketball make more than the NBA, nearly $6 billion every year. A free education is not enough if the NCAA wants to act as a money making business, and not reward the teammates that are making it profitable. If the NCAA does not want to pay college athletes, than it should not hold the players back from going into the professional league. The players develop the profitable incomes, but the money received go to the NCAA and schools alone. Amateurism then serves as an image by the NCAA to take advantage of such great athletes, creating a system that benefits off of their talents for at least a couple years. If the money that these sports made for the schools’ athletic department was not so great, then possibly the NCAA could support the idea that the students are just participating in a normal extra curricular activity.
