Does obliviousness will help you survive a society that lives in the shadow of customs and tradition? How is it like living in a society with double standards? The Age of Innocence shows how Americans lived their lives in the High Society of Old New York and how people are expected to live according to the conventionalities that the society dictates. Edith Wharton, the author of this novel, depicted in her novel what it is like to be the only one who does not think that traditions will not bring a society into success and how innocent and ignorant people are to think that they can dictate everyone’s action to be in accordance to what they think is “civilize”.

Newland Archer, at first he has lived a New York life and is glad that he is with someone who is also from New York and bears the Characteristics of a New Yorker, but eventually his perception changes when he met Ellen Olenska who he regarded as a liberated woman and knows to think freely. He felt that kind of jealousy from Ellen which turns into an admiration. May Welland Archer, a woman who embodies that tradition and customs of Old New York society as her parents pass it unto her, lives a life following what others will say and not follow her own thoughts because she is afraid of committing mistakes or things that is not acceptable to the norm. Countess Ellen Olenska, May’s cousin who grew up in New York and bears the lifestyle of a European woman. She is seen in the society as a disdain to their family’s name because of her behavior. Despite her difference from the norm, she is still supported by her grandmother Mrs. Manson Minggot, whom Archer’s alsoadmires. Henry and Louisa van der Luyden are like minor characters but play a very important role in the society because they are like their standard of wealth and approval. If they accept someone in their society it seems like everybody will accept them too. The characters clearly show that if you have that wealth and you bear that family name, you are regarded in the society even though you do not have that capability of doing meaningful
