When I’m 65 For the past year, I have been thinking about my age. It has been on my mind constantly. And now today is February 26th, 2061 and tomorrow I turn 65. I have to let that sink in for a minute. 65 years old. Being on this Earth for that long almost doesn’t feel real to me, the time has flown by. I feel younger than I am, but I can also definitely feel the effects of my age in my body. There are some things physically that I can’t do anymore, my body aches me sometimes, my fingers aren’t as agile, but my mind is still sharp. I am very fortunate to still have my sense and thoughts. As I get older, it makes me look back on my life and everything that I have experienced in these six and half decades. Now this

It seems that the older you get, the faster the years go by. I feel that by recollecting my life and telling my story is an important thing to do. I haven’t done huge things that the world would take notice of, but I built a life that I think is a good one. I remember back when I was in college, I was taking a class and we had this assignment where we had to talk about what we thought our lives would be like when we got to the age of 65. I don’t remember what I wrote or what I predicted would happen in my life but I wouldn’t mind reading it now and compare it to my actual life, to see if I achieved all that I hoped I would. Even at my old age, I still have time to accomplish some more feats, I might even surprise myself. The way I see it is that as long as I have air in my lungs and blood in my veins, then I still have time. Life is a working progress and I want to have one that I can look back on in my death bed and be satisfied with. Time is the most valuable thing on this Earth and I don’t intend on wasting it. It is the only thing that can’t be gotten again once you lose it. Every day I wake up and ask myself, what am I going to do today? The answer to that question is what you do in your life and how you live, you just have to make sure you don’t let time pass you

The Literal Enactments of the Dual Concepts of ‘Creating an Area of Visibility’ and ‘Providing a Platform’ for the De-marginalization of Age Studies Kathleen Woodward’s “Introduction” in the book Figuring Age: Women, Bodies, Generations, is riveting text that deals with the subject of age studies (AS) in association with older women and their representation as well as self-representation of discourses on aging and their experiences with aging. Stephen Katz’s (2014) text “What Is Age Studies”, discusses the critical contributions being made to AS as “scattered and splintered distributions of academics, advocates, public intellectuals, and political leaders working across various organizations with different resources and mandates” (para. 3).…

It is never too early to start learning how to age well and stay healthy longer. In my research, I came across and article about a wall street stockbroker Thomas Graham Kahn he is the president of his own firm still actively running the firm at the ripe old age of 106. The News article stated that he also has two sisters and a brother who all made it past 100 years old. This is very rare and amazing. Mr. Kahn still in good health and his mind framed still work in unison with each other.…

Growing Old It seems that since the beginning of history we have seen explorers and kings search every corner of the world for the fabled Fountain of Youth in hopes that they will stay forever young. We’re all going to get old. It’s not something people want or like to think about. In fact, some people, even adults, are hesitant to spend time with elderly people because it can remind them of their own mortality. [5] There’s no doubt that some aspect of aging will be uncomfortable or undesirable. [1] Whether it’s your family pushing you into a senior living center, having health issues, facing age discrimination or really just having your body fail (which it surely will), some part of aging is going to suck.…

Portrayal of the Older Adult in the Humanities In today’s world, there is a great misunderstanding about the aging process and a plethora of associated myths. Many people have a jaded view of aging and the elderly in general, which may be attributed to the false portrayals and stereotyping of the population in media platforms such as movies, television shows, and novels. There is a great disconnect between the current generations, which is even more concerning in our “aging society”, meaning that in the coming years, those over the age of 60 will outnumber those under 15 (MacArthur Foundation, 2009). A report published by the MacArthur Foundation (2009, p. 2) summed this problem up best, “Too much of what passes for knowledge and understanding…

Aging is a beautiful challenging unique process that we have the privilege of tackling in each of our lives. For some it may be an easy planned out progression without many bumps in the road, but for most it is an ever changing journey that makes us who we are today. Aging doesn’t always ask us what we want or what we planned on doing with our time, but instead gives us experiences, good and bad, that make up our lives. What better way to understand being an adult and the aging process than to ask people who are right in the middle of it! Because different people with different ages have different experiences, I interviewed a 20 year old, a 58 year old and a 67 year old and asked about their aging experiences.…

Aging is inevitable in all living things. As individuals age, a number of things occur, both mental and physical. Graying hair and wrinkled skin are external signs of aging and the most noticeable. Cognitive changes, which are associated with mental processes such as sensation and perception, memory, intelligence, language, thought, and problem-solving, occur among aging adults (American Psychological Association, 2015). People age at different rates depending on genetics, diet, culture, activity level and environmental exposure.…
