Analysis: Venus Of Willendorf

Decent Essays
The ancient art from chapter 17 that I feel comes in close comparison to my ethnicity is “Venus of Willendorf”. The images “pear shape” reminds me of a sense of femininity, strength, and a woman’s figure whom might be pregnant. I’m of African American decent and currently 6 months pregnant. My curves and body is very similar to the woman in this image. As weeks and months pass my own figure becomes more pear shaped and plump. The “Venus of Willendorf” is a symbolic image and representations of female figures surviving from the Paleolithic period. During this period humans were hunters and did what they needed to survive, defining strength. I relate this to my own ethnicity and culture because as I struggle to get out of bed in the morning,

The face is almost feminine in its style with the graceful features (Ridgway 1967: 46). This is not what is normally expected of a face made in the Hellenistic era, where the focus would be on the naturalistic features and dramatic expressions. The eyes have not made it through the test of time and are now missing but they would have been made of a precious dark stone, glass, and bone, like archaic kouros. The hair looks like it is beaded, which is a characteristic of kouros but the actual style of the hair, tied back, is not representative of the archaic…

The two sculptures, “Venus of Willendorf” and the Minoan snake goddess, are both similar and different in many aspects. They are both showing their breasts, which is considered to be a symbol of fertility. “Venus of Willendorf” is smaller than the Minoan snake goddess by about 10 inches because it was made to carry around, but the snake goddess wasn’t. They’re both seen as fertility figures, but I find that the snake goddess was seen as more powerful and stands tall, while Venus is more feminine and soft. They both begin the start of women depicted in art and fertility figures.…

Then the statue Rahotep and his wife Nofret reminded me of the style of gender differentiation the Egyptian artists used with skin tones and colors. The beige alabaster further signifies the figure’s gender. Aside from this, the palette was more of a political statement of power than this “spoon” seems, as the worn dip under the ibex/gazelle’s neck shows how many times the lid would have been slipped off. An abundance of direct symbols, the twisted perspective of Narmer’s body and him smiting an enemy all hold the traits of the confident classicism the Egyptians are known for. Likewise, the female figure is stiff on the outset: legs glued with a light seam between them and bent up like a tail, and an unemotional face, even only an impression of a face.…

The story, Tartarus of Maids by Herman Melville, is about a seeds man who takes a trip out of town to visit a paper mill. When the seeds man goes to the paper mill he asks for a tour. On this tour the seeds man realizes that the only people working at the paper mill, or at least on the machines are women. The seeds man seems very shocked and soon becomes uncomfortable by the situation going on in the paper mill. That is a very short summary of the story, however, if you look deeper there are many different symbols depicted in the story that give it a much deeper meaning.…

One interesting feature of this figurine is that the face of the woman is by no means distinguishable as a human face and no facial features (nose, eyes, etc.) are carved. Rather it seems that the artist purposefully covered the features up with what could be a headdress or some other sort of covering. Despite the lack of facial definition, we can determine that the sculpture is indeed of a woman because of the protruding breasts. Contrary to the facial aspects of the carving, the body parts are heavily defined, which can be interpreted as that for the culture at the time, women’s importance in civilization as bearers of children was highly recognized and of great…

This may have been a common myth to warn children of the dangers of wild animals. My Teleological understanding is with Venus’s response to both the lovers in her story and Adonis’s death. She creates an understanding of the nature of lions when she transforms the personalities of the desecrating lovers into the beasts. She also explains the existence and meaning behind the wildflower, Anemone, as well as its red color, when she grows the flowers in Adonis’s spilt…

It is ironic that Pentheus’ head was imagined to be a lion, seen as confident, powerful, and full of pride, because although these characteristics are deemed highly in civilization, it was what caused Pentheus’s downfall. In addition, Agave was described to having the “speed of a dove” (1089) when attacking Pentheus. The dove symbolizes purity, the heavenly messenger, and grace; to have the women described as hunting as a pack of doves demonstrates that one’s inner desires can drastically change one’s intentions and character. The women felt empowerment and confidence under their possession, which terrified Pentheus because it prevented him from being in control. Since Agave and all the other Maenads women were strapped down by the rules and constraints of man made law, it caused them to significantly suffer the consequences of appealing to one’s natural instincts and…

The painting I chose to do an analysis on is “Kneeling Mother with a Child at Her Breast”. In the painting I see a African women with dark skin kneeling down on both knees holding her baby in her left arm with one hand behind head and the other on the buttocks. She is kneeling on a round grey mat while the baby is sucking on her nipple. She is also starring in her baby’s eyes with somewhat of a grin on her face. Both her and her baby are butt naked in this painting.…
