The day Nwoye learned that a boy named Ikemefuna was going to be living with him and his mother, was one of the best of his life. Even now, he can look back and remember the excitement and relief he felt when Ikemefuna first walked into his hut.
Back then he was a stout, structured boy who’s bronze skin seemed to glow brighter than Chukwu in the early morning light. Sometimes when Nwoye, 75 and sagging from old age, lies in bed at night he thinks of Ikemefuna. He thinks of what he would look like now. They ate together, slept in cots pushed together in the center of a room, and spent every moment of their years as brothers together as well.
Even though the two were around the same age, Nwoye still looked up to
Ikemefuna immensely. He was tough- he was strong- he was everything a perfect clansman would grow up to be at the young age of 15. Everything the boy accomplished, Nwoye wanted as well. He would run, fight, climb and farm just to be like his newfound brother- much to Okonkwo’s delight. But even though those years with
Ikemefuna, those three amazing years, were the best of Nwoye’s life, he still could never unsee what made them come to an end.
It was a dry and hot day, everything seeming to crack under the sun’s glare, when Nwoye first overheard his mother and Okonkwo talking in hushed voices. Nwoye huddled in silence in the other room, listening intently because he knew what was going to happen next. Okonkwo would get mad-his mother would suffer because of it. But when the minutes dragged on and he didn’t hear any screaming, not even the sound of a blow landing, Nwoye listened closely. In fact, he strained to make out what they
