During this semester, I uncovered a multitude of literacy practices that the discourse community used to address on another whenever communicating. There were active members on Tumblr that had a very interactive online community were the fans would write, share, and exchange feedback about The Walking Dead. Studying The Walking Dead I cultivated a way to connect to the fandom community through literacy. When I started this class, I thought literacy was simple just reading and writing. However, this ethnography research on my fandom taught me that literacy events is not all the same when trying to learn literacy. It showed me that only you can control your thoughts on literacy. I found out that going through tags, reposting blogs, and interacting through surveys to help me improve my knowledge on literacy.

In one of Romero’s classic films Dawn of the Dead, it reflects on the society failures with the unfolding disaster that happen during that time. With success you have to keep your audience “zombifyed”. With new concepts and ideas, this extended the franchise to create arguable the best zombie movie. In (2004) Shawn of the Dawn capitalized on that new idea and add humor to horror. Commentators like Lam and to a lesser extent Turkle fail to see past the surface of new media usage. To them an individual who is engaged in social media is nothing more than a person captivated by a computer monitor, when in reality the individual is using the computer monitor to interact, communicate, and express themselves in ways that would have been impossible only a brief decade ago (Gopnik,2011). A quote from Alison Gopnik best summarizes the views held by Lam and others like him, “the year before you were born looks like Eden, the year after your children were born looks like Mad Max” (Gopnik,2011). The digital word is an amazing place, and the fact that it is distinct from the actual reality around us does not devalue its usefulness in making our…

The power of literacy lies not only in the ability to read and write, but rather in an individual’s capacity to put those abilities to work in shaping the course of his or her own life. With the insight that genuine literacy involves “reading the word and the world,” renowned educator Paulo Freire helped open the door to a broader understanding of the term, one that moves from a strict decoding and reproducing of language into issues of economics, health, and sustainable development. Freire’s view of literacy is at once practical and all-encompassing. Whether it is the words of a language, the symbols in a mathematical system, or images posted to the Internet—literacy can transform…

I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…

The Walking Dead aired 'Monsters' last night and it was the third episode of season eight. ' Monsters' was the first episode this season to disappoint me and cause a loss of interest. I found this subject to be very interesting as well. I talked about the 19th-century living where the man worked and the women stayed home, and learning about how other countries have similar ideas but that are very different in how they implement it. I never had heard of cohousing until I read it in this chapter, and I find that the way the responsibilities are shared among a small community, rather than a family, is very different from what we know living in the United States. When I thought about this, the first thing that came to my head was The Walking Dead, and how they have found, what I believe to be one of these communities. This last season they lived in a community that is very eco friendly, which allows them to live there, and everyone…
