The Scandalous Art of Bigotry When one thinks of America, they think of a money-hungry country that is centered around racism and success. Our history often includes racial situations that benefits those of the Caucasian race. However, racism and prejudice was evident even before the American Dream was created. Those qualities transitioned to the minds of those superior to us and then eventually convinced them to believe that they should create even more ways to prevent the inferior from achieving their goals. Trump recently attempted to get rid of DACA, a document created by Obama that ensured immigrant youth safety from deportation (Surana). Along with this comes limitations set by the government for those on Native American reservations. “All development projects on Indian land must be reviewed and authorized by the government, a process that is notoriously slow and burdensome” (Regan 4). The extra time taken by the government to do these things for Native Americans could be spent improving their work and living space, but that would only push Native Americans further to their American Dream. America’s complex past shaped the views of people today. It’s become more difficult to achieve upward mobility. In Sherman Alexie’s Fixed Income, Alexie talks about how one of the cooks at McDonald’s had an Electrical Engineering degree but uses his studies to put two pickles on the hamburgers (Alexie 1). Also, slavery plays a big role in how people view each other. In earlier times, to be of darker skin tone meant that you were of lesser value. These expectations block the chances of one showing their worth and opening a business or doing whatever necessary to fit their American Dream
