1. Historians have often said of the Civil War: “The North won the war, but lost the peace.” Analyze the validity of this claim in regard to actions of the U.S. government both during the conflict, as well as during the period of Reconstruction .
I think that this statement is valid because there was an uprise in violent groups during the Reconstruction period, such as the KKK.
http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org states
“The Klan's organized terrorism began most notably on March 31, 1868, when Republican organizer George Ashburn was murdered in …show more content…
Most Klan action was designed to intimidate black voters and white supporters of the Republican Party”
This shows that although the north was victorious in the civil war, there was still a major presence of violence.
I think that the statement is valid because of Johnson’s falling out with congress.
In btp on page 455
“He removed several of the tougher military commanders in the south and replaced them with officers who were willing to let events take the on course, which meant letting former confederates take control of local governments and use their power to undermine the black rights.”
This shows that although the north had won the war, there was still conflict, because of Johnson's self focused and racist actions.
2. Evaluate the various plans for Reconstruction.
I think that President Johnson’s plan for reconstruction was a failure because it was discriminate towards former slaves
On page 450 of BTP it states, “Johnson supported the 13th amendment but refused to go beyond that. He made it clear that he had little interest in political rights for former …show more content…
Having been denied education and wages under slavery, ex-slaves were often forced by the necessity of their economic circumstances to rent land from former white slave owners”
So, even though former slaves were now free they weren't properly trained to make it on their own in the real world and that made them have to live in poverty and become very dependent on their former owners for land.
4. Analyze the successes and failures of Reconstruction.
I thought that the successes of Reconstruction was the passings of the, 14th and 15th amendment.
Pbs.org states, “The Fourteenth Amendment, defines all people born in the United States as citizens, requires due process of law, and requires equal protection to all people. The Fifteenth Amendment, prevents the denial of a citizen’s vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
These amendments all were in favor for the rights of African Americans and was successful in expanding african american freedoms.
Failures: KKk
The KKK was a failure of the reconstruction
