On page 15, in the book of The Legend of Jesse Owens, Emma always envisioned of taking her family to the North to find a better life. In her dream, she saw her husband working a fine job and all her children attending high school. Another example of her dream was that there would be a church would be nearby, instead of it being nine-miles away, and she could afford to put store bought meat on the table. Emma planned on turning her dream for the family into reality. She badgered her husband, Henry to take his next share of the crop, and head North to escape discrimination in the South.
