by, Rob O’Donnell, Linne Hoofnagle, and Alicia Thomas, discusses the facts of why uniforms should not be enforced in schools. First off, Rob O’Donnell talks about how it effects the young person, “How a young person appears makes no difference whatsoever to their education…Schools should be encouraging free thought and self-expression, not suppressing it” (O’Donnell). He is expressing his concern for the students’ freedom of expression. Another reason stated by Linne Hoofnagle is “If we convince ourselves that placing limits on clothing choices will eliminate school bullying, we are kidding ourselves” (Hoofnagle). Bullying is already a big problem in our schools and just because school districts have all kids dress the same definitely, will not make it go away. A point made by Alicia Thomas talks about that point by stating, “While uniforms do assuage the best-clothes competition, they create a new and more painful contest: the best-body competition…They can expect to be ridiculed for not looking as fantastic in their uniforms as some of the better-looking students” (Thomas). She is saying that students could be body shamed for how they look in their specific uniform options. “Uniforms jeopardize the ability of America’s youth to express themselves, to become the people that they want to be” (Thomas). With this statement, she means that students would not be able to express themselves the way the want to with dressing their own ways. Being restricted to few options does not give you very many options to express
