Sports teams should always give out trophies, but those trophies should be given out to only the best players or best teams. If trophies are given out as participation awards, they lose their meaning and athletes wouldn’t give their best efforts. Athletes should have to work for a trophy instead of just showing up to receive a trophy. Trophies should be a motivational tool not something that could potentially encourage athletes to decrease their efforts. To earn a trophy, athletes should have to prepare and perform above average. If everybody gets a trophy it can take away the pride of having a trophy. Rewarding every effort with trophies does not prepare children for adult life.
In order to receive a trophy, an athlete should prepare and perform above average at an event or at the end of a season. When athletes receive awards for simply showing up at practice and participating in games it sends the wrong message that kids don’t have to try their best to receive a trophy. However, after many years of seeing participation awards, many people are rethinking the benefits. For example, a sixth grader form New Jersey has many trophies, but admitted “I’m not actually so good at sports.” Some people may feel that it builds a child’s self-esteem if everyone gets an award, but kids know they are getting the award because everybody is getting one. Some people also express in the article “Should Everyone get a Prize” that a trophy is one way to encourage a child's efforts.
