Personal Narrative-Progress, Not Perfection

Progress, Not Perfection

My friend turned to me, empty can in hand, his face probing. I recognized he was asking where to put it. Pointing, I reply “the recycling bin is in there.” We live on a cozy, little boat and it would be silly for him to squeeze past me to deposit it appropriately, so I take it from his hand and put it in its proper place.
He screwed his face up in a question and looked at me again, “You keep a recycling bin on board?”
Knowing my friend sees eye to eye with me on environmental concerns. I say “Of course I do. Don’t you?” Does he really not separate his recyclables from his trash on his boat?
He replies “There’s no place to put it in the Marina.”, as if I didn’t know that.
I tell him, “We bag ours up and take it to

A great many of us used to do the same thing. We all called it a healthy glow. But as time passed many more of us than not have gotten the message to wear sunscreen and hats. This is a societal change that is still in progress but has been in progress for 20 or 30 or more years. Now, I wear a wide-brimmed hat that shades my face, neck and shoulders. I sit under umbrellas and, taking my cues from cultures that of grown-up in the worlds desert climates, I cover up with a light airy long-sleeve shirt. It’s taken this long for our society to come from the point to where we are now and we’ve still got a ways to …show more content…
What made people start recycling? And start carrying reusable grocery bags to the store? And start driving lower emissions vehicles? What makes climate change deniers not change? The cynic in me believes that’s motivated by financial gain. They’re saying “I’ve made a bunch of money from living unsustainably and I’d like to continue making money so that I’ll be very rich and powerful. The future be damned.” Years ago, there was a small but vocal minority of granola-eating, hairy-legged, Birkenstock-wearing treehuggers speaking up and making sustainable choices. As time passed “those crazy hippies” ideas became more and more mainstream and our numbers have grown by leaps and bounds. Even some of the most die-hard conservatives I know are putting a recycling bin on the curb next to the trash bin. Or making other sustainable choices that they would not have even considered 20 or 30 years ago. I’d like to think people are seeing that we need to make some changes in the way we treat our Mother

Even with all these views on how we should change the environment nothing ever happens. Things don’t change with a person these views can be said to everyone but action need to be done because “old habits die hard” and everyone has the habit of I don’t care. The tensions that would arise for pushing something like this on someone is that they don’t want to change the way they are because they don’t see the big picture. The just see the little ones around them that mean nothing to them because it is not there’s. The similarities that they have are that they both want the change to happen and they want the world to be a better place for them and their family to live on.…

When someone throws a plastic wrapper out the car window, or down the sewer drain, does it ever occur to them where that trash goes? According to litteritcostsyou.org, 1.9 billion tons of litter ends up in the ocean each year. Plastic is polluting Earth at a disturbing rate; humans are essentially killing themselves and killing everything else that surrounds them off this planet due to prolonged littering. What most people don’t know, is that litter such as plastic bags and cigarette butts, do not dissolve or disintegrate, or at least within a human’s lifetime. Marine life and other animals that live near bodies of water consume the trash humans carelessly dispose, which kills them due to choking and other hazardous effects from trash consumption.…

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

He tries to create awareness on how much waste we, as American individuals generate, and the need for this to change. In one of his many interesting yet disturbing examples, he is puzzled on how we toss 80 million plastic bottles every day “when almost everyone has access to clean drinking water” (Mckibens). Or how we toss enough aluminum to rebuild our entire air fleet every three months. But McKibbens doesn’t stop here, he also argues that this waste also comes in the form of money and time by stating that Harvard graduates that pursue careers in finance and consulting are wasting valuable time and money that could be spent on more productive careers. As part of a solution, McKibbens argues that to get out of the perhaps irreparable situation that we are in, we ought to relearn old habits of reusing and recycling things we no longer need.…

He explains “voting, not voting, running for office, pamphlets, boycotting, organizing, lobbying, protesting, and when a government becomes destructive of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, we have the right to alter or abolish it,”(4). Although this approach does seem nice, I do reiterate that this seems to be not a fair option for all. In my personal experience, growing up in a low income community my parents first of all i 'd not worry about the environment, let alone had the choice to become some type of environmental activists. Both my parents have to work full time jobs and still have to worry about meeting other needs--such as food and clothes. Although they were able to do this, it did not leave much time for them to do other things especially boycott a corporation that is hurting our homes.…

Throwing trash away should be as easy as 1-2-3. However why don’t people practice this? This effortless notion can cause awful effects on our community and most importantly our environment. There is one planet that is inhabitable, so as humans we should do everything in our power to make the Earth sustainable. As many think recycling promises a brighter future for our planet, they are quite frankly being deceived. We are more likely to drive ourselves into the ground by funding recycling than to just leave the garbage to, quite literally, rot in its own filth. To some people recycling is just a lost cause, but to many others’ it has wedged its way into becoming a part of his or her lifestyle.…

While surveying the 14 random people, I noticed that most of them had similar responses to each question. On the scale of 1-10, most of them answered between 4 and 6 about caring for the environment. They knew it was an important topic, but most of them hardly did anything to solve any environmental issues. Only 5 people out of the 14 said they recycled their materials while the others just threw everything away. Their response to recycling was that they did not “have time to sort out their trash” or did not want to “bother with it.”…
