To willfully put oneself in harms way to defend what is right versus doing what is easy is the definitive key to manhood. The story "Walking Out" by David Quammen exemplifies the notion of a young boy's evolution into a man. " Walking Out" describes the story of a father and son's annual hunting trip through the backwoods of Montana. David assists his father on his search for a moose, but what he actually discovers is far more important. With a mangled arm, and his father on the brink of death, David faces the physical struggle of escaping the danger of the woods and the mental battle of taking on responsibility for the first time.…
The article, “The Evil Swirling Darkness” by Lauren Tarshis, said that people ignored the first signs of warning that a tornado was coming. This shows that danger can be real, even if you don’t think it is. For example, the text states that, “The family prayed for the safety of their missing relatives.” There were survivors, and they had hardships in and after the disaster. There are many effects of tornados.…
In the memoir A Long Walk Gone, Ishmael Beah shares his memories of the Sierra Leone war. The war caused many hardships to the citizens of this country. It also caused a loss of innocence. Ishmael Beah embodies the loss of innocence by explaining life’s casualties before and during the war. Before the war broke out in Sierra Leone, Beah’s life was innocent.…
When Lady Macbeth kills herself, Macbeth states, "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more" (V.V.19-28). In other words, Macbeth compares his existence to the condition of being a mere ghost. He goes on to compare people to actors who worry about their brief moment in the spotlight only to cease to exist before they realize it is over. The metaphors Shakespeare uses, comparing life to a "walking shadow" and man to "a poor player" emphasize the fleeting nature of life. Shadows are gone as soon as they appear, and actors only assume their character: the people they represent have no true meaning.…
Night by Elie Wiesel is a powerful survivor story showing the true happenings of the Holocaust through the use of specific imagery and story-telling. While I have read other Holocaust literary pieces, I found his to stand out amongst the others. The words created scenes for you, showing the true terrors these people were going through daily. Wiesel was only a teenager when he and his family were taken from their home in Sighet to be sent to Auschwitz and then later to Buchenwald. His testimony as what did happen in those camps were genuine and unforgettable.…
Literate Arts can be fine for explaining a variety of historical, crucial events. Richard E. Miller, author of The Dark Night of The Soul employs texts to display how the literate arts can be beneficial for emphasizing the importance of historical catastrophic events. Moreover, Miller employed a variety of “how,” and “why” questions and how to respond to them in his writing to the public to engage them in a conversation and question their views on the literate arts. Furthermore, Miller asks questions about historical events that have happened over time and probably impacted billions of civilians, which in my opinion is one thing the literate arts is excellent at describing.…
Take a Different Road Perspective and the stereotype are the two main themes brought out in Brent Staples “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space”. This is a personal account intended to bring an empathetic eye on the stereotypes that black men face. While the author has exceptional credentials as a writer combined with first-hand experience with prejudice laying a basis for ethos, the pathos used to draw a reader in to emotionally identify with his argument flounders, being too provocative at first for those he is sharing with before engaging his motive. The authors intent to establish race coupled with gender for his encounters with bias lacks an impartial look. Circumstantial situations mentioned by Staples blur the lines of cause and…
Although Soto's use of enjambment throughout the poem forces one to read on and provides a means of suggesting one thing when the poem in fact means another, the ending of a sentence without beginning another enjambment also calls special attention, as these are outlier lines. The first time this occurs is when the girl who the speaker is with chooses a piece of chocolate that costs more money than he has. In this line, "... And when she lifted a chocolate/ That cost a dime,/ I didn't say anything" (line 33-35). Soto ends the line with "I didn't say anything and does not continue the poem until the following line.…
I wrote about a important ride from lexington and concord to warn the rebels that the British were coming and by using that I will explain how the author used fictional and non fictional information from another story. Johny tremain was written by Esther Forbes. The Midnight Ride was written by Jesus Garcia, Donna M Ogle, C. Frederic, R. Singer, and Joyce Stevos. this paragraph is about the time that the midnight ride took place and johny tremain took place. The times both took place in the morning of April 18th 1775 to warn the rebels.…
Evil in Humanity From the beginning of time, humanity has been shaped by the inescapable circumstances that frequently emerge from surrounding social climates and impulsivity in decisions of peers or leaders. The fate of one’s future predominantly relies on the hand they are dealt, whether it affects aspects of one’s life favourably or quite the opposite. The book Medicine Walk by Richard Wagamese is an emotional story about how being caught in a hindering situation can permanently destroy one’s life and the family or friends surrounding them. Often traumatic experiences can invoke an unstoppable evil in certain individuals, in obvious or more subtle ways.…
The work 'Disappearing into Night' explores how sensory experiences of photography juxtapose with perceptual manifestations of resettlement whilst roaming through Doha, Qatar at night. My aim is to investigate how the growth of cities generates anthropogenic pollution. Moving through atmospheres that appear to be silent yet in reality never sleep in the sky glow enveloping the biosphere.…
On February 29, 1960, Ricardo Leyva Muñoz Ramirez was born in El Paso Texas. Twenty-five years later, Ricardo, now known as Richard, became “The Night Stalker”: enemy number one of the city of Los Angeles. Ramirez moved to Los Angeles when he was eighteen years old and slowly began his reign of terror over the city. His crimes evolved from burglaries to the extremely violent rapes and murders of dozens of women. Ramirez was not born with the skills and drives to commit these acts.…
For my service project I organized a group of volunteers to help at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's annual Out of the Darkness Walk. The walk took place on September 24th at Highland Park in Washington. In total there were 402 walkers that raised approximately 18,281 dollars toward suicide prevention. As volunteers we helped set up, passed out food, helped with the coloring station and cleaned up. On January 27, 2011 I lost my brother in law to suicide and it was devastating.…
Have you ever experience being discriminated because of your appearance? Your skin color? Your race? The short “Night Walker” by Brent Staples is about his experiences to his daily life, being accused of someone that he isn’t because of his skin color, his race and even his appearance. In “Nightwalker,” Author Brent Staples reveals a theme that: People shouldn’t judge others by their appearance.…
Writing is a tool that should be used to push limits, and expand horizons and challenge cultural norms. Unfortunately, not all personal writing challenges the reader however, the majority of good writing will. Writing is not inherently political, but it is one of the most direct ways to express political beliefs or push a specific agenda. Creative writing however is also shaped by an authors political belief thus making it a much more political form of writing; therefore, the more political the author the more that comes out in there writing. In Adrienne Rich’s work Diving into the wreck she has overtly political poems that are real and still relevant in todays politics this is very prominent in her poem “Rape”.…
