Hawthorn’s worked well to manipulate Goodman Brown, the devil used words such as “Friend” (Hawthorn 2) and the phrase “I have been well acquainted with your family”. He made Goodman feel as if he could be trusted, which could lead to insidious consequences. At the satanic ritual in the forest, the devil spoke to the entire town about how “Evil was the only happiness” and how they should all embrace sins. The effects the devils had on the characters in both novels were enough to last a lifetime. The fear of meeting the devil is greatly enough to damage any person's innocence and send them into a state of paranoia and distrust. In the end it's about how you choose to handle it, do you give into temptation and pressure? Or do you fight back and decide your own
