Christopher McCandless is a man who had everything and gave it up because he was annoyed with the world and he wanted to escape. The drastic decision he made captivated many, especially the author Jon Krakauer because he had a similar experience and he could relate to McCandless's disappointments. Jan's review is based on the Outside Magazine article that was written by Krakauer describing McCandless's journey. To some McCandless' story is just a tale of nature's harsh reality, but for others they view him as a heroic figure. Many criticize him for venturing unprepared into the Alaskan wilderness and for inspiring others to do the same. Many people have different opinions about Chris. Some people believe that he was foolish. Christopher McCandless was in fact an intelligent individual. He excelled in college and graduated with honors in 1990. He was also a cross country captain at Emory university and was a superior athlete. In fact, Chris's father Walt McCandless said, "Chis was a high achiever in almost everything that caught his fancy. Academically he bought home A's with little effort" (109). Chris was a person with extraordinary gifts and a lot came to him naturally. It almost seemed as if everything in life was just handed to him like it was that simple, but it was an innate ability to be so talented and gifted. Chris was also impressively good at any sport he played. When he playing a sport he resisted instructions of any kind, especially the ones that didn’t come naturally to him. The only thing he cared for was a challenge. For example, his father Walt says, " It wasn't until he took up running competition, a ten-kilometer road race. He finished sixty-ninth, beating more than one thousand adults, and was hooked. By the time he was in his teens, he was one of the top distance runners in the religion" (111). Chris did not want to listen to people trying to help him or coach him, this implies that Chris was an individual He was aware of the skills he had. He was eager to discover out every skill that was beyond his academic abilities. After all, he knew how to take care of himself too! On McCandless' way to Laird River Hot Springs, he met a man named Gaylord Stucky. He was an older gentleman who liked Chris very much. For instance, he explains his first expression of Chris and he says, " Alex was a clean-shaven and had short hair, and I could tell by the language he used that he was a real sharp fella. He wasn't what you'd call a typical hitchhiker" (159). Indeed when it comes to McCandless, he should've been
