You Are a Badass - Jen Sincero │Summary

You Are a Badass helps you to become more self-aware, figure out exactly what you want in life, and not worry about how you’ll get it. It helps you to not care what other people think of you, and helps you figure out how to be in a state of happiness, most of the time.

Our Subconscious Mind

Our subconscious mind plays a major role in our life. Sometimes, our subconscious mind has beliefs that are not even our own.

For example, when someone tells you that you need a university degree in order to become successful, you might actually start to believe that. However, you don’t even need a degree to be wildly successful. Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, and Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen dropped out of college,

We choose how to experience life. Jack may say “I hate the rain,” while Jill says, “I love the rain because it waters my garden.” Your reality can be good or bad, it's all your perception. Choose to see yourself as a badass. That is, your reality.

Love the One You Is

In order to not care about what people think about you, you need to accept yourself as you are, and be completely in love with yourself. In a world of more than 7 billion humans, you are one-of-a-kind. You are unique, special and talented. Here’s some tips on how to love yourself:

• Do incantations. This is where you speak out loud affirmations with conviction, using your entire body, so that these affirmations enter your nervous system, and become a part of you. This is something Tony Robbins teaches.
• Do things you love. When you are in a state of joy, you manifest what you want much quicker.
• Become a more optimistic person. Studies have shown that optimistic people are much more successful.
• Remember you are on your own journey, so the only person you should compare yourself to, is yourself.
• Don't be too hard on yourself, forgive yourself.
• Love yourself.

If you really want something, that’s taking you closer to your life vision, and it’s not hurting anyone, then you should go for it, and not care about what anyone thinks about you.

Remember, anyone that has ever accomplished anything huge has always faced criticism. You should never seek approval or validation from people, otherwise you place your happiness in the hands of others.

What Are You Doing Here?

In life you need to have a clear purpose. Every person is born with unique gifts and talents. We just need to find out what they are, and share it with the world.

In order to find your purpose you can:

• Pretend to be an alien. Everything is new and exciting. What do they love to do? This will give you a new perspective.
• Just take the first step. Just do anything.
• Copy successful people. See what they did and copy them to be successful.
• If you can't find your purpose, don't be too hard on yourself. Let yourself off the hook.
• Listen to your intuition.
• Follow your fantasies.
• Love yourself.

My purpose in life is to serve others. My mother says this began at birth because I was such an easy baby so she could take care of my hyperactive and autistic brother; she says it is just naturally who I am, and I agree. This is the reason I chose to attend high school at St. Joseph’s Academy whose motto is “Not I, But We,” and whose mission includes “serving the dear neighbor without distinction.” This is also the reason I chose to attend a Jesuit University for my undergraduate career, as its mission incorporates making “decisions in the light of what is truly for… the service of those in need” as well as forming “men and women for others.” These ideals are my ideals, and I believe that this is what draws me to be an Occupational Therapist…

“to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived” This excerpt from “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau speaks of a life unlived when it's nearing too late. Thoreau writes about living every day as if it were your last, taking in every chance to enrich and define yourself. How pursuing even the most simple of passions could prove to be worthwhile. I agree in the possibility that it is never too late to do what you’ve dreamt of and bring new perspective when looking into the horizon. When you genuinely love doing something it becomes your passion, but if fear or fear of regret impact your decisions it can be easily regretted.…

It’s tough to remember the first time that I heard the age-old question about the purpose of life because I’ve heard it so much. However, the first time that I really took time to think about this question was a few weeks ago. I recall waking up in the morning and asking myself a simple question, “What am I looking forward to today?” To my surprise, I couldn’t answer the question and I realized that I was currently living an extremely boring and meaningless life. I then stumbled upon another question, “What is the purpose of my life and what am I going to do in the future?”…
