Amitai Etzioni is a well established Socialist who taught at Columbia and Harvard known for his radio, television, newspaper, and magazine articles. In his op-ed article, Working at McDonald’s published by the Miami Herald in 1986, Etzioni writes about the common issues students face while working in high school. He states that students having jobs while in high school lowers attendance, decreases school involvement, and does not offer any skills useful in the future. He also argues that teenagers also do not know the value of the modern dollar. Does he actually have the evidence, and support to make such assumptions?
Etzioni firstly states that work will cause a lack of school attendance and involvement. He does not give any examples or reasons to believe that work is the main cause of the “lack in school attendance.” Secondly, he states that workers will gain little to no skills for the future. Making claims such as “youngsters live for free at home”(par. 17), is an assumption. Teenagers are sometimes helpful in paying for bills, car insurance, groceries, or rent. I believe high school students should have jobs, to save for their future and should help their families whenever it is necessary.
