The article “Cops Who Covered Up Laquan McDonald’s Death Back on Chicago Payroll,” by Michael Harriot, connects to the theme of Justice in Ghettoside because in the article, the police officers who tried to cover up Laquan McDonald’s death were not punished for anything they did and were even put back on the city’s payroll. Which shows that law enforcement isn’t concerned with trying to stop the violence in their cities. This is similar to Ghettoside because at one point in the book it is said that many officers just sit and do nothing acting like they’re important, and the people supervising them don’t punish them for it. These officers sitting around and doing nothing leads to fewer crimes being solved on the streets of L.A. This article “13 shot, 5 fatally, in Monday violence across Chicago,” by Chicago News, is a report of the number of deaths on Monday, June 12 in the city of Chicago. Thirteen were shot and five were killed within the thirteen.…
In order to adequately represent his case, Etzioni provided a significant amount of information and facts to support his claims. As Etzioni reports, teen jobs generally look quite appealing on the surface, offering good pay and regular employment; however, the workplace lacks any sort of room for creativity and thought, and equips teens with sub-par skills which are of little value outside of the store. Even though there are some fundamental principles that teens can learn from this type of work, such as being accountable to show up for work and learning the value of money by earning it yourself, there too many drawbacks that outweigh the advantages, per Etzioni. Details presented by Etzioni help the reader to better grasp and understand the…
Amitai Etzioni is a well established Socialist who taught at Columbia and Harvard known for his radio, television, newspaper, and magazine articles. In his op-ed article, Working at McDonald’s published by the Miami Herald in 1986, Etzioni writes about the common issues students face while working in high school. He states that students having jobs while in high school lowers attendance, decreases school involvement, and does not offer any skills useful in the future. He also argues that teenagers also do not know the value of the modern dollar. Does he actually have the evidence, and support to make such assumptions?…
Exploitation of the Individual In “Behind the Counter,” Eric Schlosser discus’s the efficiency of the under-paid adolescent and the exploitation of taxes. “Behind the Counter” is similar to “Selling in Minnesota”; both articles discuss the exploitation of employees and demonstrates the cause and effect of this exploitation. Ehrenreich provides an example of a young employee and her reactions to indoctrination in an early orientation. Schlosser describes the typical work day of an adolescent McDonald’s employee; He goes on to explain how she gets up extremely earlier for a job that will hardly fulfill any financial needs.…
“Don’t Blame The Eater” Fast food is making children obsesses. In the text, “Don’t Blame the Eater” David Zinczenko the president of Galvanized Brands openly blames the fast-food industry for the recent rising numbers at the obesity epidemic in kids. Zinczenko announces at the beginning of his text that kids are suing McDonald 's “for making them fat”(241.) Zinczenko points out that the lack of information about what it 's consume and the lack of healthier alternative is affecting the consumers and increasing the numbers of obesity in America. Zinczenko postulates that fast-food restaurants easily target children because a numerous amount parents work and cannot supervise what their children eat, often leaving them with food options such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell and other fast-restaurants.…
Many people had to face a lot of difficulties during the Great Depression. The many problems Americans had face was the struggling of trying to find and keep a paying job. They were also having troubles trying to pay for a house and food. American teens had struggled a lot during the Great Depression due to trying to get an education and support their families; however African and Mexican Americans also struggled a lot during the Great Depression.…
After reading the story “Working at McDonald’s” by Amitai Etzioni I agree with Etzionis thesis that overall there are pros and cons of working part time as a teenager. If I were to have to choose a side I would have to disagree with Etzioni. Etzioni believes that there are more negatives than positives involved. However, I believe that in this situation the pros outweigh the cons.…
Eventually everyone has to do some sort of work. However during high school, getting a job can be distracting, and avert a student from focusing on their education. The ways employment can harms a student’s schooling are, the time needed to do work, a lack of sleep through staying up late doing homework, the excitement of earning money, and drugs and alcohol use as a result of extra spending money. Steinberg finishes the article by referencing the belief that a job in adolescence builds character.…
Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Nation, used techniques of persuasion through ethos, pathos, and logos and they help him become credible when it comes to uncovering the dark sides of the fast food industry. Schlosser’s audience are the people who eat at fast food establishments and who buy their products without knowing what it takes to serve it. By analyzing the book we can see how the author’s use of rhetoric analysis supports his argument. It not only benefited his purpose, but it also helped the reader understand it and take a stance on his argument. Pathos is an appeal to emotion and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.…
Fast Food Nation: Final Exam 1. Schlosser paints quite a dire picture for how teenage workers are treated in the fast food industry. He describes how teenage workers are force to work long hours, even 12-hour shifts, after school and on the weekend, often in robbery-prone conditions. To make matters worse, the fast food industry is process-oriented and requires very little learned skills which lessen the teenager ability to negotiate working hours, salary, or others working conditions. Schlosser noted how the part-time nature of fast food work, and the high turnover rates also gave the workers little negotiating ability (p. 75).…
School systems need to change the order of priorities in order for students to feel like they are learning essential skills. Teens are becoming overly stressed by not getting the education which they know is very important for basic needs in the business world. Stress levels are increasing in an alarming rate and it is time that teachers know how to help or be able to spot…
If a teen missed school because of work, it is most likely that he or she does not have a good time management. What is more, McDonald’s offers scholarships to encourage high school students to work there and keep pursuing higher education at the same…
Every four years the Olympic games are held in another country, in the 2012 Olympic games over 2.1 million people have attended the events in the first three days. (Degun, 2012). One of the Olympics worldwide sponsors is McDonalds, who has been an official sponsor of the Olympic moment since 1979. McDonalds has served a Varity of menu choices to over one million athletes, their families and fans. (McDonalds, n.d.)…
Qualitative Research is primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. Qualitative Research Methods gives would-be practitioners enough practical instruction to allow them to undertake, analysis and report research (Edwards, 2008, p. 238). The tow companies that I have been consistently doing research on are McDonalds and Walmart.…
Burger King, Wendy’s, or McDonalds? I usually go with McDonalds, I don’t know what it is, but something about McDonalds attracts me to them more than the other two mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, I love all three of those fast food chains, but McDonald’s has a competitive advantage over the other two whether it be their food, customer service, or etc. In addition, their business strategy, alignment with its business, human resource, and staffing strategies also help create this competitive advantage. However, they are some threats that could impact McDonalds.…
