New York City College of Technology City University of New York Law and Ethics Case: Jeanette M. and the Phone Call Erica Rotstein October 7, 2017 Professor Bonsignore HAS 3560 -Legal Aspects of Health Care Abstract The advancement in the field of medicine over the years has led to doctors and health care providers having more responsibilities on their hands. This brings into question what should and shouldn’t be done, as well as what is morally and ethically right. However, this isn’t so cut and dry.…
The medical ethics case on Dr. Anna Pou questions the ethics itself in several forms and different issues. The issue is that the medical departments, nationally or locally, should always provide care for patients no matter the type of emergency or disaster. It doesn’t matter the amount of laws and regulations they pass or provide to help medical institutions work easily and efficiently, which should help provide patients with medical care they rightfully deserve and need. In order to be able to successfully allow such difficult decisions to be made and acted upon such circumstances, such as the one occurred in Medical Memorial Hospital in New Orleans, they need to create clear and conscious laws that is workable and lawfully and medically ethical that the head and the staff of the medical institute can follow easily to avoid such situation in the future. As Dr. Pou has been trying to pass laws to help…
The State of American Healthcare Based on the technology and innovation of the twenty-first century, one would like to think that the American health care system is healthy and always in the best interest of the patients. However, this is not always the case. Susannah Cahalan tells her own story through the eyes of a patient being drastically affected by America’s crippled healthcare system. Upon completion of medical school, most medical doctors will take the Hippocratic Oath, essentially pledging to not knowingly harm patients.…
Robert Watcher, in his book The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age, describes the many effects, both helpful and harmful, that have distinguished this age of computers in medicine. Watcher uses his influence as the professor and associate chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, and his years of experience in the field of medicine, to look down on the developing world of technological medicine and offer his own opinion. Just from the title one can gather that not all is right with the field at present. His interesting and amusing narrative intends to combine the rapid development of technology, with the age-old science of medicine, and hopefully fix what has…
Medical practices have changed tremendously throughout the years. Thanks to the many medical advances and innovations, problems that would arise in the past are solved before they even happen. However, doctors and medical professionals have been taking advantage of those that are oppressed in society. The method of choosing the least well off in society for medical studies are extremely unethical and those who are already victim to the many injustices of the medical field are owed reparations. To the hundreds of thousands of people that suffered at the hands of those who are supposed to help them lose all sense of trust that they once gave to doctors and scientist.…
Fully trained health care providers can give medical aid yet in the event that a staff part finds that a person has had a mischance or sudden ailment then they should dependably call for help quickly and make the region as sheltered and private as could reasonably be expected, sit tight for arrive and after that take after the fully trained health care provider directions. Continually giving backing and consolation is additionally critical and the monitoring the airway, breathing and circularity checks for the person receiving the medical…
Medical tools and operations have been advancing ever since the first human cut his or herself on a rock, whether the advancements have been significant or not. Through all of this time, scientists and doctors have been searching for answers to try and improve the health of the world’s population daily. What many people do not realize is although the cure for cancer has not yet been found, treatments for many other diseases have been and medical technology has come a long way. Every decade, new advancements are made, and some are better than others, but they all shape the lives of many people in many different ways.…
There is a degree of ambiguity concerning what situations constitute a true emergency and physicians must sound clinical judgment and carefully document their reasoning (Glezer A, Brendel R.W. 2010). In addition, the patient has the right to be free from restraint and seclusion, in any form, imposed as a means of coercion, discipline, or retaliation by staff. Restraints should not be used for convenience (Annas GJ.1999). This ensures that we are taking all steps necessary before using restraints.…
It’s important to stay up to date on coding changes. To be a truly viable coder it’s absolutely necessary to stay informed about what’s taking place in the industry. Having a membership with AAPC and AHIMA has shown me the importance of staying current and these memberships are a great way to do it. Continuing education is necessary to keep your certification credential current, but the classes, webinars, and seminars will also help you stay informed of new developments that will affect you on the job. By keeping current you can be an asset to your organization and that can be good for you when it comes time for promotions and raises.…
I completely disagree with this hasty generalization; although the RIP has some influence in the doctor’s decision, it doesn’t not keep the doctor from overriding the systems output. Meaning that the doctor can ultimately administer any medicine, preform any surgery, or decline a patient if he or she decides too. There aren’t any statistics to prove this generalization. Paragraph three also states that the new technology does not make the decision, but provides information to help trained medical personal make a more informed decision on how to treat a patient. This being a computerized program used worldwide, helping transfer patient information from one place to another such as a social network…
Financial trends and reimbursement changes go hand-in-hand. Healing Hands Hospital relies on revenue from managed care reimbursements, therefore any changes within the managed care system will affect our financial budgets and income. This will affect how we pay our employees and what kind of services we are able to provide. It has major influence on how we deliver and pay for health care products and services.…
The R.I.P Program In regards to the R.I.P system my position would be against it. For instance, using technology to determine outcomes of a person’s wellbeing, is insane in my opinion because doctors are depriving a human being from treatment, because a computer program helped them make that “informed decision”. The reason as to why I am position against the system is because a computer can interpret something incorrectly, causing a doctor to make a misguided decision about the need for a patient to be helped. But because technology is making decisions for the doctor, or as stated in the article it does not make the decision but it helps the doctors make more informed decisions (Para.2), a patient will not be administered the care they may need.…
Abstract Law is formed for a motive and it regulates in many areas like medicine, before practicing any medical procedure or conducting a form of administrative position each medical specialist or non-medical specialist operative must comprehend a difference between ethical or unethical. Ethical and Unethical plays a significant role in our humanity every way it is whether up to how you want to approach it. According to “The case of Jeanette M. And the phone call” altered from the beginning of chapter 1 of “Medical Law and Ethics” inscribed by Bonnie Fremgen, it exemplifies how a medical receptionist and the doctor action resulted in death of Jeanette M. This case falls into so many categories of violations and code of ethics such as being…
Since Beauchamp and Childress wrote The Principles of Biomedical Ethics in 1977, patient autonomy, justice, non-maleficence and beneficence have been accepted as the four major medical principles (Murgic, 2015). In my opinion, autonomy is the hardest principle to implement especially in end-of-life care. I am reflecting on the Charlie Gard case where a healthy baby boy was born and it was soon discovered he had a rare genetic mutation that affected his brain, his musculature and most other major organs. The health care team reviewed the potential outcomes for this baby and decided that the best option was to allow him to “die with dignity”, remove life support and not pursue any untested experimental treatment. This could have been the end…
Providing more qualified and efficient health professionals would enhance the quality of life to patients suffering, but it does not get around the fact of many extraneous cases where modern medicine can not offer assistance to people. Patients who are experiencing excruciating pain or those who have no hope of escaping a hospital bed should not have to endure the rest of their lives in that position. Every branch of science has its limits and patients should not have to suffer because of the limits of the global health care system in the twenty-first…
