Introductory Frame : Writing aims
It is important to be concise and express your meanings clearly. As George Orwell (1992) said in “Politics and the English Language”, “If it is possible to cut out a word, always cut it out”(p. 182). Thus, I chose the passages in the sentence task for revision and extension part, both of them were the analysis of love poems. One paragraph is the analysis of William Butler Yeats’ love poem, another is the analysis of Anthony Ma’s love poem (SHEN, 2016, par. 1). I hope through the revision, the analysis could be concise with fewer and shorter words but clearly conveys my meaning. Additionally, the passages did not have a strong opening and mostly was to analyse the word choice and rhetorical appeals. Therefore, my purpose of this task is to revise the opening sentence and to clearly express my meaning with shorter words and logical orders. Furthermore, I will write a new paragraph that analyse the rhetorical devices of William Butler Yeats’ and Anthony Ma’s love poems and explore the meaning that “As with beauty, good style is most definitely in the eye of the beholder—and thus is always affected by language, culture, and rhetorical tradition (Lunsford, Matsuda& Tardy, 2013, p. 235). An effective writing need a clear purpose and focus on the intended audience. Thus through analysis and comparison, I want to show more about the differences in writing based on cultural context.
