Nicolas Carr stated “…Even a blog post of more than three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb. I skim it.” (page574) Did we train our brains that reading is not important and we just need to absorb the stuff that is important? In William Badke’s article he spoke about what the research showed. William Badke Stated “The longer we work online, the less tolerance we have for ‘concentration’ and ‘contemplation’.” (Online 51) Research was done between two types of people, people who use the internet and people who are new to the internet. The study was done to measure the brain function during internet usages using a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine. The studies man focus measured the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain. Studies show that between the two there was similar brain function when reading a book, but differed when it came to using the internet. After five days of gathering research and evidence it showed the new internet users were beginning to use more than minimal brain function in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain, just like the native internet users. Researched showed we began to process data quickly and eliminated what wasn’t required. This didn’t allow the subjects to place any data in the deep memory. But both subjects demonstrated brain activity when reading, which proved function had not been lost all together. The …show more content…
Everyone learns different and uses their brain in different ways. So, I would argue that the internet isn’t making us dumb but it could narrow our brain function if we allowed it to. The internet gives us access to so much information so quickly whereas if we were to read it form a book we would have to go to spend so much time at the library. Those whom are busy with school, work and maybe a family wouldn’t have time to do so but could easily access the internet. I find myself skimming through articles and not reading the whole thing, but the important information is what stands out to me. I believe I am more knowledgeable because how much information I have easily accessed to me. I don’t agree the internet is making us dumb, I believe it allows us to become smarter because we have unlimited
