The piece of literature I chose for my essay four is “Wild Geese,” by Mary Oliver, the poem is about freedom and how a person imagination makes them feel more alive. Separating one’s self for the world around them can lead to a more relaxed and calm character. I chose this piece because the idea of someone’s imagination, making that person feel alive and free reminds me of my brother and sister because they have a very active imagination. I used the Literature Resources (Gale) database to find a critical essay written on “Wild Geese.” The source is a good piece of information to have, it challenges my opinion the

The righteous and glorified path is rising up for or against what is occurring, however the much more common path is to step aside to save yourself and avoid conflict. These two main paths come are seen in Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China, Assignment Rescue, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Restrictions of Essay Writing in a Curriculum: An Evaluative Essay on Fred Stenson’s “In Search of a Modest Proposal Fred Stenson’s essay “In Search of a Modest Proposal” (Essay Writing for Canadian Students with Readings, 340) expresses his disapproval of essay writing in the grade nine curriculum. Stenson feels that essay writing should be a creative process towards student’s personal opinions, but the curriculum sets guidelines that the students must follow which prevents this. His reference to what his daughter has been taught in her English class is the basic premise of the essay as it is used to not only develop the essay but also the thesis which is not clearly stated. Dillard In-Class Write Annie Dillard includes two major analogies in her text, “The Pilgrim at Tinker Creek” including the penny game she used to play as a child and the gaps that house the spirits. Dillard uses the penny game not to disappoint strangers with a mere penny but rather to “cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity,” showing the importance of little things that can make your day. (Dillard 22) Dillard also uses the gaps as well to emphasize the importance of little things, concluding that one can “discover itself for the first time like a once-blind man unbound,” in these gaps. (Dillard 258) Although seemingly dissimilar, these two analogies that Dillard use both relate to the same meaning of spending the time and resources that you have from the little things in life and appreciating what you are given.…

After reading a majority of essays from NPR's This I Believe series, I found a large number of essays that would be superior for students to read and analyze. One essay stuck out of all the other essays that spoke about a cat, that wandered into a prison yard at a local correctional facility. " Caring Makes us Human" by Troy Chapman would be an excellent essay for English 1301 students to read. Chapman provides very complex sentences, proper nouns, eulogy, and uses statements to make a point. He writes in praise of a scruffy orange cat that wandered into a prison yard and how the cat affects the other prisoners around him and himself.…

While upon first glance her corpus seems to be filled with elementary age written material- one word titles such as “Poppies”, “Ponds”, and “Daisies”, and seemingly undersized poems- Mary Oliver’s sharp observation of the natural world and all it’s inhabitants allows her to transcend and creatively tackle some of the toughest topics to pen, such as death and the meaning of life, in a way that allows readers of every age to grapple with and discern her conclusions. Many of her poems captured in her Pulitzer Prize winning collection “New and Selected Poetry” feature her rapturous lyricism covering her absent apprehension about what will happen after she takes her last earthly breath. Through her use of symbolism, light and dark imagery, and allusion in her poem “White Owl Flies Into and Out of the Field” (page 99), Oliver argues that death is not something that should preoccupy human fears but should rather be accepted by all.…

In Isaac Babel’s short story My First Goose, the narrator struggles to fit in to the world of war. Babel illustrates the paradox and duality of war as a heroic and brutal endeavor, and in order to properly display this paradox, the narrator must travel to a world separate from normal civilian life. Here, he initiates himself into the brutal practices of this new world in order to fit in. Babel then reveals the consequences that the narrator faces from sacrificing, or not sacrificing, an integral part of himself in order to survive in such a brutal environment. In order to make a place for himself in such an environment, the narrator must relinquish his innocence and morality, but his failure to do so leads to guilt and misery.…
