• Background: o Bureaucrat working at MNU o He was given the job of dealing with relocating the prawns from District 9 to District 10 o He is happily married and has a family; mom and dad
• Position: o Protagonist of the film
• Character development: o At the beginning of the film, he was a very unremarkable and an ordinary person. He was simple and clumsy; E.g.) He doesn’t know how to start the mike in the beginning of the film, and he was reckless: E.g.) He carelessly held the canister that contained the alien fluid o Later, when he was mutated and taken to MNU for experiment, he was shocked to find out what the government was doing to the prawns as he was just doing his job at MNU and he never knew about what they were really doing.

He tries to come neat and tidy but looks like a nerd= Not your typical hero o His clothing changes into old clothes when he was on the run and hiding in district 9= the old clothing matches the unsettled environment of district 9. This could also show us that he belongs there now o Little/no clothes when he transformed completely into an alien • Background: o Disabled o Had an older twin brother who died. This makes him become to do the Avatar program to take over his place o Former Marine: His military background helps the Na'vi warriors relate to him o Isolated because his brother died

For example, both Wikus and Jake are seen as a less typical hero or protagonist that we mostly see in other films. Wikus is seen as an amateur, clumsy, simple and rather an anti-hero in the beginning. Jake is also doesn’t look like a hero because he is disabled and had no proper training in the Avatar program. They both start out as they don’t know anything nor uncertain of what they are doing, but both of them get a character development throughout the film. Wikus had a character development when he was in contact with the alien fluid and started to transform into one of the alien, he started to have feeling towards the aliens and ironically becomes a good person inside when he is actually turning into an alien which is not humane. He didn’t choose to become an alien, while Jake chose to become one of the Na’vis. Avatar had a more Sci-fi genre than District 9 if we compare the technology; the computer screens, the aircrafts, the AMP suits and the Avatar program is all futuristic. However, because the background was not Earth but Pandora, its set in the far future, the animals that live in Pandora and the technologies are all futuristic and non-existing in modern time period; this film can also be considered as a Sci-fi fantasy. District 9 was a Sci-fi as well, although there were less futuristic technologies compared to Avatar and the background was more rural compared to Pandora. It’s also set in the future, but in the
