School Uniforms
The battle still rages over the certainty of whether a student is fully obliged to wear their school uniforms or whether each should be allowed to dress as one desire. The protagonists over this ideology argue that school uniforms help in improving the student’s performance through the reinforcement of their esteem and pride towards their school. A question put forth to counter this is why do we still have cases of dismal performances in the same schools? If the school aims at drilling the students into being good and productive students, it is only with a logical appeal that they are groomed in a manner that prepares them for what the outside world has in store. Rockquemore and David L. Brunsma, published an article in The Journal of Education Research. The data in this was collected from the National Educational Longitudinal Study, and they took national samples of 8th graders and continued collecting data from them all the way until college (Rockquemore and Brunsma). According to Barbara Cruz, “Student uniform use was not significantly correlated or connected with any of the school commitment activities such as absenteeism, behavior, or substance use (drugs)” (Cruz). Also, students wearing uniforms did not appear to have any significantly different academic preparedness, preschool attitudes, or peer group structures with preschool attitudes than other students (Cruz). By having all students put in a common uniform, this directly translates to the cost of purchasing the uniforms being borne directly by both sets of parents regardless of their financial strengths. The matter grows worse particularly when the number of children in house hold exceeds one. Uniforms aren’t always helping family save money, but what it does help with, is parents not having to shop at resale stores and get handed down uniforms (Gale). Parents have made it clear that they do not mind having kids wearing school uniforms but when it comes down to them having to spend more money that is where the line will be crossed (Gale). Parents are often, according to the rules stipulated by the constitution on their need for paying taxes for the free education for their children. Taxing these poor souls with the need for paying an extra coin for the education of their kids is quite an unnecessary burden that can be easily avoided. That makes the whole system appear as an unfair and as a scheme that takes money from its citizens. The financially unstable families often have their meager income consumed in a big portion through the purchase of uniforms which often are expensive. Allowing students to go to school without the need for having a common uniform will lessen the financial strains on parents and thereby improve their capital base for a better standard of living.
