As harsh as that may sound, it is the sad truth. While textbooks may not offer online databases and answers to a given worksheet, that does not mean they are any less valuable than technology. Those who conclude that reading is no longer important due to the development of technology are wrong. Reading is what develops so many important skills that are used in our daily lives. Reading helps someone better their grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure. When reading a professional literary piece, one is not only absorbing the story line, but he/she is also absorbing the correct use of hyphens, dashes, commas, apostrophes, colons, and semicolons. The misuse of such things is what could potentially ruin a good essay. The lack of grammar could cause the paper to seem unorganized, and the lack of punctuation could make the paper seem confusing. In example, if I were to put, “Lets eat Grandma,” instead of “Let’s eat, Grandma,” then the understanding of the text is very misleading. A world without literature, is a world without understanding. If technology takes the place of literature, then people will lose imagination, comprehension, and critical thinking. Imagination, comprehension, and critical thinking is what allows our brains to process successfully, and allows us to understand different material--whether it be difficult to read or simple as can be. It allows our minds to think of what may come next and how a certain situation could affect the whole meaning of another
