As White Privilege suggests white privilege is institutionalized in the United States because it is woven in the fabric of society and one could argue that it is impossible for whites not to reap the benefits of being white. The government would need to have the right mindset and efforts to change racism. Institutional racism in present day society proves that the right people are not in charge for abolishing racism. Lipsitz’s article goes into great detail on how the federal government has played a huge role in supporting white superiority. I benefit from the privileges of institutional racism. For instance, minorities are less likely to receive medical care, while I benefit from great medical insurance and health care. There is also said to be disproportionate share of loan denials to minority groups, while I never even had to worry if a loan would be an issue for school. There are many more examples of how the government favors whites and promotes institutional racism. Although I benefit from them, it does not feel right that others don’t simply because the color of their skin. Racism is very real and prominent in today’s society and I now see the negative repercussions of white privilege which I never saw before. This is very relevant in society today because millions of people are going about their day being racist without even being aware of it on top of the ever present police brutality and racism situation. It is important for white people to know the true advantage that they have, and the work that needs to be done to be truly equal.
