Messing up is part of life, if you fail you would usually learn a lesson to not do it again. Throughout Where The Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls, the theme that was developed throughout the story was determination,Billy wanted to do something, and there was always something that got in his way, but Billy didn’t give up and got back up and kept trying.

One example of Billy not fearing failure, but rather fear not trying is on pages 20-21, Billy would say to his customers for two years, “would you like to buy some crawfish or minnows? Maybe you'll like some fresh vegetables or roasting ears.” Billy worked constantly trying to get the coon hounds he wanted. That shows determination because he wanted to get the dogs he wanted know matter how long it took.

Now Billy can see the world in a human way and (though not completely) in a Tralfamadorian way too. This means it is not easy to tell if he ever exercises free will, because humans may say yes, while Tralfamadorians may say no. A human that understands their theory of time and why they think that free will is impossible, like Billy, can make his mind up about it and will maybe decide that he actually did use free will at some point in his life or maybe he will decide that he did…
