Essay, “What to Do with the Kids This Summer? Put Em to Work”, talks about how some teens should have a summer job, although some are too busy. Ben Sasse argues that jobs can provide many challenges and opportunities for teenagers who are about to enter adulthood. My feelings on the issue of whether teens should get a job are split. On the one hand, I agree teens need jobs to develop everyday traits, qualities, and characteristics; however, based on my personal experience, I know that some teens don’t know the value of working hard/hard work. I agree with Sasse’s argument about how working can develop helpful traits for later in life. I have always wanted to get a job, and that’s what I’m looking at this summer. Up until now, I have mainly been doing volunteer work. I’m not saying it’s bad because I have thoroughly enjoyed doing it, but as I get older I want a source of income. I have always encouraged others to do the same, but sometimes it doesn’t always work out. All I can do from here is hope that some teens can get through those obstacles to become more successful in the future. Sasses emphasizes the fact that teens don’t know the value of hard work, however, I disagree with his claim because teens already develop this trait through their activities. Sasse mentions, “You should get up and out to work early enough to feel the value of being able to get to bed early again” (22). Most teenagers today have multiple things going on at once throughout the year. Whether it be sports, clubs, or other extracurriculars, many teens have put in a lot of work, effort, and time to get better. For instance, I play football throughout the summer and fall, I lift through the winter, and in the spring I have track & field. Although, even with all of this going on, I’m still looking to get a job this
