In the ted talk video, We Should all be Feminist, that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie spoke about a huge topic “feminism”. Adichie describes and explains her different encounters of “feminism”. Should we all be more feminist? What does it mean to be feminist? Is there a difference between double standards and feminism?
Adichie starts off the video mentioning to her audience that Okoloma,her childhood best friend, died in a plane crash in 2005. Adichie explains to us her first encounter was when she was fourteen with, Okoloma, who first called her a feminist. At that time, Adichie didn’t even know what that word meant. After the release of her first novel, a man came up to her and told her she’s a “happy feminist”. Adichie not only became a “happy feminist” but also a “happy african feminist”. Most of Adichie’s experiences with this topic was mostly when she was an adult but she had one while she was in primary school. Gender is more important and focused on than the ability a person has. Adichie stated, “Culture does not make people, people make culture”. Culture has a huge affect on how a person looks on to gender. In America the women staying at home is no longer a big topic but in other countries we don’t realize that women are still being not being heard and treated as men. Some women in other countries do not have a say so who their husband will be. In America we still have a close mind on this topic. Parents of a male will teach them to be strong, not to fear anything, not to ask help, and to be hardworking. Whereas a parent of a woman will teach them to cook, clean, be proper, and will have to have a husband in life. Gender effect on how we continue to raise and treat our children and make a difference for all the future generations all over the
