The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history resulting in around 620,000 deaths. It was a war between the North and the South, also known as the Union and the Confederacy respectively, and it was a war fought by both sides for their beliefs and ideals, with the Confederates fighting to preserve their way of life and the Union fighting to bring the Confederacy back into the Union. The Battle of Wilderness is a major battle that occurred in Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia. The Union army(Potomac Army) was Ulysses S. On May 5, 1864, the Union Army of the Potomac once again started a war with the Army of Northern Virginia in the Wilderness of Spotsylvania. Over the course of two days, the two armies fought to a bloody end, inaugurating a new era of violence in the war in the East. One man said “I saw many wounded soldiers in the Wilderness who hung on to their rifles, and whose intention was clearly stamped on their pallid faces. I saw one man, both of whose legs were broken, lying on the ground with his cocked rifle by his side and his ramrod in his hand, and his eyes set on the front. I knew he meant to kill himself in case of fire”.During these lethal and life changing 3 days geography and resources played a crucial role of the outcome of the battle. All in all, geography and economy of the battle of wilderness was a crucial factor of the outcome of the battle.

It was also a problem because it was under trees and forest where you can’t see your opponent coming, or shooting. Both the north and the south had issues coping with the geography of the battle of Wilderness. Although the forest was not the geography of the battle it was the the type of land above the geography. Since the Battle of Wilderness was fought above the geography it still affected the outcome of the battle.In addition to the trees and forests there were several rivers such as the Rapidan river that were near the battlefield making it easier to retreat is possible.The North especially were not trained to fight,most of the soldiers that the North had were farmers and laborers that were volunteering to work for the army. The North were also not used to fighting under the tree’s where you can’t see where your opponent was. So the Geography of the battle gave a disadvantage for the North. On the contrary, the South had more experienced fighters. In addition the South also had an advantage in cavalry,artillery, and on infantry. Robert E. Lee said “ The artillery could not fire unless there were open fields”, and the wilderness prevented the North from having open fire. One of the major reasons the South had the upper hand with less casualties with only 11,033 in comparison to the casualties of the North which were 17,666 casualties.
