Comparing Rip Van Winkle And The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow

Washington Irving was an American short story writer, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" who are both from his book "The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon". "Rip Van Winkle" is a short story Irving written while he was living in Birmingham and published in 1819. Considering it has been adapted for a lot of other media like cartoons, films, operetta or even stage plays we can reasonably say that the story has an important cultural importance.

I found interesting the fact that everyone, depending on their own life going to have a different opinion about if what happened to Rip was a good or a bad thing. Some people will think that the ghosts of Henry Hudson's crew cursed him with their drink because he missed twenty years of his life, lost all of his friends and didn't saw his children grown up and other will say that they helped him because now that his wife is dead she won't annoy him anymore, he made new friends and as he said himself he"arrived at that happy age when a man can do nothing with impunity".
