Summary
I interviewed John Cummings whom is the Associate Director of Washburn’s Student Recreation & Wellness Center. Cummings received his Undergrad in History at Northern Arizona University and his Master’s in Public Administration from Drake University. I purposely selected Washburn’s Recreation & Wellness Center because that is the gym I personally use and did not know much about the managerial details and the overall statistics about the people that exercise at the Rec. The Recreation center is unique because it provides a different social atmosphere to over 500 students daily all who have made the conscious decision to come to exercise. The rec is not for athletic team practices and physical education classes its open to all students

The first is the begging of the fall semester which is typically when people want to try out new things and are exploring the campus and second peak time is January-March which typically is people who are working on New Year’s resolutions and/or want to get the “spring break body” ready. The main reason the rates do decrease is because exercise adherence conflicts with time management. As a student life is always very busy and if a conscious effort to add exercise to your routine you will not work out. Often people will start at the begging of the semester working out then they will progress in the semester and class loads will become heavier and they will put off working out to instead study or relax in other ways; which more often than not progresses to not working out at all. The best way to resume exercise adherence is through time management and by finding an activity that they enjoy or at least despise less than other exercise actives they will tend to exercise more often. This is one of the reasons why the gym has so many different classes is to help provide opportunities to try out new types of exercising. Another reason why people stop exercising is because they are not seeing visible results just simply by exercising thirty minutes a day. So they stop exercising and move towards something more drastic such as diet pills or steroids …show more content…
The wellness center is another free amenity in the recreation center which helps to set up programs for beginners and for advanced individuals. It starts by the individual making the decision that they need help figuring out how to get results. They first fill a survey which identifies what their goals are and struggles they have with working out. Then they will speak with someone in the center who will help come up with an exercise prescription of a way to meet the person’s goals. The wellness center does more than just come up with an exercise plan, figure out what can help the individuals overall health this this could be deeper lying psychological issues. Not all psychological issues can be helped with exercising but it can be part of a bigger picture of what can lead to mental happiness, reduce stress and increase concentration in the class

I would like to recognize Jed Smith as an exceptional individual as well as collegiate strength and conditioning coach. His knowledge, personality, and altruistic character led the University of Northern Iowa to new heights. I was a student-athlete at the University of Northern Iowa majoring in Exercise Science when Jed became the head strength and conditioning coach. Jed started a tradition and foundation at UNI on an academic level as well as athletic. Academically, he worked closely with the exercise science department to put more of an emphasis on strength and conditioning as a profession, which further led to both of my degrees in Exercise Science (i.e., M.A. and B.A.).…

As a result, this means the other seventy-eight percent of America’s adult population does not even meet the minimal exercise requirement, so what exactly causes someone to skip their daily exercise routine?
