Curators and historical professionals have great influence on the way members of the public interpret the presented subject matter, which gives them a unique influence on our interpretation of history. Our perspective on the objects is mainly shaped by the context wherein the presented objects exist, and it can be affected by our own physical experience of viewing the object.
War art objects and historical artifacts are presented within the given context of the curator or historical professional. The curator’s main objective is to diligently and meticulously present these works in a way which efficaciously communicates the position of the institution or artist regarding the subject matter existent within the material. This presentation usually intends either to inform the public, provide a new perspective or share a thought, opinion or position.
When looking at an artwork, the surrounding objects can affect how the viewer experiences and understands it. The curator’s deliberate placement of it alongside other pieces of art places it within a greater narrative, allowing the viewer to see it within the presented context.

According to Marita Sturken, the original veterans chose to have it placed in the Constitutional Gardens, located in capital of the United States (46) and Lin chose to have it exist beneath the surface. Additionally, the texture of the monument invites the viewer to physically touch and make personal marks on its surface (47). These artistic decisions help to create and strengthen attitude of reflection within the viewer, which was the artist’s original intention, and might not have been achievable otherwise.
