Carmen is in second-grade student, she is currently having challenges reading and is performing at a kindergarten reading level. When starting the assessment with Carmen, based on previous assessments, I knew her reading level was below second-grade reading level. Her reading over assessment has seen improvement and she is able to apply skills she has learned. Carmen was able to read Walk in the Fall and The First Snow. She demonstrated improvement in her reading based on the reading techniques she implemented while reading. The level of independent/instructional reading for Carmen was Walk in the Fall, because she was able to read the passage without any challenges and only read two words incorrectly. Her current level of instructional/frustration was reading the second passage The First Snow. The passage was more challenging for Carmen to read, her reading was choppy, …show more content…
The first area to begin helping Carmen is to return to her recognizing high-frequency words, especially the 24 words that are at the kindergarten level. When reading high-frequency words Carmen did have challenges with reading two words because she either read the word incorrectly or she confused words. Reviewing high-frequency words in a minilesson will help Carmen identify the words she read incorrectly. RR is an evident based strategy designed to increase reading fluency and comprehension through the development of automatic word processing and contextualized linguistic effect (Winter, 2007). The first strategy that Miss Jones can use is the interactive read aloud. According to Freeman and Freeman (2006) “effective teachers read aloud to their students every day whether they are kindergarten teachers or high school teachers” (p. 132). When teachers are reading aloud they model the process of reading to the English Language Learners on how to read in English from left-to-right and up and down. If Miss Jones read aloud to her students, it will give her new student the opportunity to gain reading fluency and comprehension skills. During the read aloud Miss Jones can do frequent pauses for her ELLs and break the text down into parts to check for students understanding throughout the text reading.…

    Miscue Analysis Essay

    • 3 Pages

A miscue is a place in which a reader's observed response (what the reader reads) does not match the expected response (what is printed in the text) (Goodman, Watson, & Burke, 2005). The term miscue is used instead of the term mistake because of the negative connotations associated with the words error and mistake. Thus, in order to observe in these group of students the aforementioned processes, I aim to develop what is called a Miscue Analysis and a Retrospective Miscue Analysis, in which researchers and teachers observe patterns that occur in oral reading and target appropriate strategies to the individual reader. Miscue Analysis allows researchers and teachers to identify reading strategies that the reader is using to make sense of printed text.…
