Visual Analysis Of Starry Night

When Vincent Van Gogh created this painting he had to have thought out the design greatly because it is bursting with plenty of elements and principles of design. The design aspects of this painting are great and lead you all over the place to give you a story and understanding of the painting. Starry Night has many design elements and principles. Van Gogh used the primary triad in this painting. Blue is heavily used throughout the whole piece. Yellow is used mostly in the top part of the painting and the accented through the lower part of the image. Red can be found in the cypress tree and along the roof tops of a few houses in the piece. The values range from bright to significantly dark. As you can see on map Value: Dark, the darkest parts …show more content…
There are many varieties of implied line in the stars in the sky, the hills in the lower right side in the background, the bushes on the left and right sides of the tree in the middle ground. There’s a line on the steeple of the church and a line on the houses, see map Implied Line. There are actual lines in the wind depicted in the center of the sky, the rolling hills, the bushes and the tree. All the lines in the hills, the tree and houses all lead to the steeple. The steeple then leads us to the sky. The tree also leads us from the ground up into the sky. Though the Cypress tree is the focal point of the piece it is not the focal area. The focal area is the crescent moon up in the sky, see map Focal Area: moon. The moon is the brightest area is right in an area that is majority blue, which gives contrast and all the stars and the swirling wind bring us right to the …show more content…
The lighter values being in the top half also balance out the darker values on the bottom. You can see the depth of space used in this painting by how the perspective of the tree and the steeple. You can also feel the space with the rolling landscape. The strokes in this image also give a sense of swirling motions giving this piece a dreamy night feeling. The strokes also give plenty of texture to the image making it so much more visually interesting than if it were just painted just naturally straight. His color choices give the main focal point (the tree) and the focal area (moon) lots of emphasis. The moon being the brightest value and the tree being the darkest value and the hills being in the middle of the composition and value spectrum, make a unity for the background, middle ground and foreground. The Moon and stars show the time of the piece being night time. The perspective we are given for this image makes the proportions of this image pretty accurate. If Van Gogh had not used the addition of reds in this image it would be a very muted cool piece and with the use of all the nature it would be unbalanced. The use of color value and scale all are what makes this painting balanced. And brings harmony. The contrast of the light colors on the mid tones bring

Color: The painting has a combination of complimentary colors that give the piece a warm look. For instance, the yellow and orange provides light to the composition and also add a visual depth to it because both colors reflect the scheme of a peaceful night. In addition, the blue in the sky beautifully portrays harmony throughout the painting, and the black in the background perfectly contrasts with the blue in the sky and the circled white brush strokes…

The main focal point of the painting is middle where the African American teens are walking towards the school. Unity of the photograph is created by monochromatic color scheme of black, and white value drawing attention to the darker part of the photo leading it by the white draws the eyes to the main focus in center of the photograph. Addition, the proportion draws eyes into looking at the people of the school, making the size of the people feel up close and the building farther away than it really is. There is no real pattern in the photo, but visual rhythm is cause by the people…

He puts emphasis on the colors of the stars, just so that the viewers can get a glimpse as to what Van Gogh saw almost every night looking out the window. One of the things that Van Gogh was known for was his use of colors. Because he was such an emotional and expressive person, he would always use colors to express how he felt. In the background of Starry Night, you can see a church and there are people out there who believe that Van Gogh included the church intentionally, because he wanted to show the viewers of his struggles with religion.…

The thick, solid black wing of the airplane breaks up the color and provides a startling and sharp contrast to all the color down below, sealing the viewer’s eye momentarily. In order to create a focal point, the plane’s wing is placed directly over the spot where the color is most abundant, thus providing the sharpest contrast. Because the wing is a large and solid shape, placing it above small dots of color that are spread out not only provides phenomenal contrast, but also balances the painting visually. The large, solid, and heavy black wing over the mass of smaller but brightly colored and cluster of lights below balance each other out. The wing keeps the blinding array of color and light from being too overwhelming, while the colors provide enough of a contrast to keep the painting interesting.…

I also love the contrasting colors of the painting as well. The light colors of the blue sky and green trees pairs perfectly with the dark colors both the man and woman are wearing. “ Anna “Why do you think they are so serious in the painting?” Jesse “I think it’s interesting how the colors the painting almost look faded or muddy, giving the painting almost an eerie feeling of possibly sadness or depression.…

This Piece by Melissa Miller, The Arch 1986, draws you in with its extensive energy. The rush strokes of used with the oil paint enforce a chaotic energy within each individual creature. You are immediately pulled in by the left top corner where the light breaks through the clouds and mystic darkness. The contrast in the sky with warm and cool colors is my overall memorable touch to it. It’s great size allows you to almost be a part of it.…

Three art elements that are in the photo I took is value, shape and pattern. The picture I took has value because there is a shift from dark to light. The background of the image and the tree trunks are dark in color but then there's a shift to brightness as we move up. Value helps determine where the light source in the image is located and it creates a form of structure in the picture. Value also helped the tree that is located in the center stand out.…
