First movies that were released did not have the sound synchronized with the following content. But that is not the complete story. Even before technology was advanced enough to play dialogue or music, silent films would normally be accompanied by a pianist or even a whole orchestra. Therefore, music and sound have always been a big part of film. Films all have the same goal, to capture and engage us within their world and to evoke feelings of excitement. Sound is the essential part of any film production that many people still take for granted. Sound is everything that we hear in a movie – words, music and sound effects. Sound effects are used to heighten a mood, advance the plot, tell us a story about the characters in the movie and provide us with the information about the location of a scene (wind howling in the mountain range or ocean waves crashing on the shore). A film can reveal so much within its sound (the frightening music in the background of the horror movie that tells you the killer is around the corner). Therefore, sounds have the ability to expose character’s feelings, actions, and film’s intentions. Music is often used for a number of effects in a movie. The most obvious way music records are used is to guide the emotional response of the audience. This is especially true in horror films, which often seek to create a sense of fear in the audience. These sounds are loud, such as a door slamming, that are meant to catch the audience off guard and scare them. Today, sounds are used in different film settings but they are mostly used in documentaries where they play a crucial role. In the area of film, the music grew to become a vital element of film production. Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera influenced the musical film industry and ever since then it has been the subject of creative experimentation over the past few years (using narration and orchestra accompaniment for silent films). According to the Vertov’s notes, the movie was supposed to be followed by a small orchestra. The notes were specific and extensive, and they were used as an inspiration for composers to create the sound score that would suit the producer’s imagination.
