Washington arrived to The Hampton Institute, he only had .50 cent that he had left from working, and his clothes were dirty. Mr. Washington was so excited to be there and felt accomplished by his journey. When He got there he went straight to the mistress in charge and he stated that (“I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student” (Booker T. Washington. Excerpt: “up from Slavery. 1901 Page5.) Mr. Washington felt that she was only seeing him as what he appeared when arriving. The head mistress was admitting other students and overlooking Booker T. Washington. Then she gave him an assignment to sweep the class. Mr. Washington knew that he had to win over the head mistress; he remembered I the class he had not done well in where he had learned this skill of sweeping and dusting and did his very best to disproved the head mistresses judgment. Mr. Washington did a thorough cleaning, where the head mistress had to inspect his work. She was pleased after inspecting his work. Mr. Washington had proved his worthiness to the head
