(AGG) In the book Under the Persimmon Tree, the main character, Najmah, changes in many ways throughout the book.(BS-1) When Najmah's mother and baby brother die, Najmah goes through many changes.(BS-2) Some of Najmah’s initial changes are reversed when she meets Nusrat.(BS-3) After Najmah meets Nusrat, she comes in contact with Nur again and this changes her very much.(TS) Najmah goes through a very long journey to get to where she is now, emotionally and physically.

“I sit in the dirt beside them quietly, not crying, not thinking, not even aware that I am breathing, and it occurs to me that I might be dead, too”(Staples 83). She is silent for a long time after this point, not thinking about anything. (STEWE-2)There are some instances when Najmah tries to talk, but she can't. “ I cannot answer him, no matter how hard I try”(Staples 183). This is when Najmah jumps on the pear truck to get to Peshawar and she goes to a house to get help. A man sees her and asks her a question, but she can't answer no matter how hard she tries.(SIP-B) The second most important change is becoming brave. (STEWE-1) Akhtar and Khalida are taking care of Najmah, but Najmah doesn't want to get too close to them because she will leave for Peshawar soon. “I feel I must keep my distance from Khalida and Akhtar because I know I must
