The writer of under milk wood: Dylan Thomas
Dylan Marlais Thomas was one of famous poet and writer in 20 Century. He was born on 27 October 1914. In Swansea an officially known as a city in Wales. Swansea is not only his birthplace but it is also his beginning of literary world. He began some of his published works in his bedroom and they are later recreated again. Then this house has been opened later for the tourism. One of his memorial statue located close to Cwmdonkin Park which is near his birthplace. An interesting part of his poet ‘Fern Hill’ is on the memorial rock.
“Oh as I was young and easy in the mercy of his means Time held me green and dying Though I sang in my chains like the sea.” (n.d., 2014)
Otherwise, he described Swansea also as an ugly, lovely town. (John Ackerman, 1996:24) He also had health problem in 1939 and he had to spent time on bed for a while. This was also the time he begin his reading habit. Moreover, his father whose was an English teacher in Swansea also an important person which Dylan talked about English language. His early age is already shown his interest of English poetry or literary world. Swansea was an important place for Dylan’s idea. Some of his poetry presented Swansea’s nature and how was this town influence to him. They had been treated as foreigners because they were Welshman who was not speak Welsh. Otherwise his behavior are marked as rebellion against orthodox Nonconformist. The relationship of his Wales and Nonconformist background are shown as love and hate in the same time. When he worked as Journalist and had an opportunity to write many articles, his thought are also concerned that his country can be described perfectly in literary term only by a great writer. As he moved and decided to stay in London, he met with many interesting people and that influence him. 18 Poems was published and it presented his poetry style. His other works were also published during his teenager. Unfortunately during this time his drinking was heavily developed. He met with Caitlin Macnamara in 1936 and married with her later. They had an infidelity relationship and also their drinking behavior made their relationship
