In Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, the author communicates to her audience that slavery is a brutal and inhumane system that needs to be abolished, she does this by showing how slavery ruins families, portraying plantation owners as ruthless, evil men who are without god, and giving the audience the insight to the true horrors of slavery.
The author exhibits to the reader how slavery systematically divides families and ruins them by providing various examples as to how families were being divided by the constant buying and selling of slaves. An example to which a family was being ripped apart is where Haley buys a mother and son from a slave auction. The author uses this point of view to make the reader feel truly sympathetic with the slaves, as well as make them question their own morals and ideologies of slavery and prejudice. The author uses an example in which Tom is on a boat with Haley and two women around him are speaking on the subject of slavery and speaking whether or not it is morally right. One argues that nothing is wrong with slavery while the other says that she is almost certain slaves feel emotion when they are sold and separated (73). This example shows the point of view of slaves on the matter being talked about as if they aren’t even there, and though some will agree that slavery is morally wrong they won’t do anything about it. By using the point of view of the slave it makes the reader understand the helplessness of a slave, in which they have no say in what they are to do and can simply be killed by their master for not complying with instruction. Another example where the author shows the emotions of the slave is when Tom is being subjected to harsh treatment by Legree because he refused to flog cassy because it goes against his fundamental christian values, because he refused to follow his master's orders he was beaten and flogged (212). This example directly shows how slaves have no regard when it comes to their personal well being. Tom was acting on his Christian values by not flogging cassy it didn’t
