Two Kids on a Plane

(This story was written in 2002 and is used here to help explain why it is so important to stay positive about yourself and others. It is also a story I never want to forget, and I always said I would publish it some day, so here it is. You should be able to get some lessons out of it on ways to stay positive when life is not going your way. Try talking to yourself the same way I talk to myself and see if it doesn’t help with controlling your ego and consciousness when dealing with others.)

This is a very short story that I always want to remember. As we grow in business we take on more responsibility and tend to worry about ‘whatever’. We also tend to forget about what is going on around us and the people we meet on a daily basis. We can easily not see the full value of people we meet because we are too wrapped up in our own concerns of business and BS. During my career I have spent a considerable amount of time traveling, mostly by air, with at least one trip a week. After a while it gets old and I lost my ability to really enjoy people. It seemed there was always some problem with the airport, the flight, my seat, or something. After 911 traveling got even worse. One positive thing I did during this time was to read more. Reading helped me to calm down and the books I read on management and leadership helped me to realize

It happened about a month after my very positive experience with those two twin boys. I have to think my revitalized positive thinking came about after my experience with the Two Kids on a Plane. I wanted to include the story, because it is a great example of one of my favorite sayings that you will read about a lot in this book: ‘Always do the right thing, it doesn’t have to happen’. This story about The Flight Attendant is a perfect example of ‘doing the right thing’ and going a little further so ‘it’ doesn’t

There are different types of traveling. 9/11 - Personal Perspective In 2001, I lived in Slovakia, my home country and did not even dream of living in the United States someday. I was slowly getting used to my new role of a wife and mother that year, quite happy living in a small country in the middle of Europe. I was visiting my parents on Sept. 11 for couple of days. Sandy Dahl, wife of the pilot of Flight 93 Jason Dahl, said, “If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” I believe that this quote perfectly addresses the horror and loss that the terrorist attacks on 9/11 brought Americans. Sandy Dahl could have been angry, aggressive, or even belligerent following the 9/11 attacks, but instead Dahl very maturely used the events as a life lesson that helped her appreciate the lives we do have. She now understands that one should not waste what little life we do have, and this is so true for every single one of us. We get too caught up in the nuisances, drama, and other seemingly important things in our lives and sometimes we forget to love life,…
