Analysis Of Tus Andronicus

Decent Essays
I had the pleasure of working on the crew for Titus Andronicus and viewing every performance in February 2016. Titus Andronicus is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare in the late 1500s. The play begins with Titus returning home with his sons and gothic prisoners. He sacrifices Tamora’s, the queen of the goths, son and names Saturninus emperor. Bassianus runs away with Lavinia, who is supposed to marry Saturninus, causing Saturninus to marry Tamora after which bloody plots of revenge unfold until all that remain are Lucius and Marcus. This production of Titus Andronicus used several technical elements as well as performance to portray themes of revenge, loyalty, and honor.

Titus was born to a future roman emperor who would shape both his political and military career. He was sort of odd considering his social habits and there was fear of him becoming a tyrannical ruler., but that all changed when he was appointed emperor. Titus’ rule had a very positive impact on roman society despite his actions before-hand. Titus was the son of the roman emperor Vespasian and Domitilla I. Over the centuries, theatre conventions evolved from the highly presentational performances of the Greeks to the extravagance of Elizabethan productions and eventually conglomerated to produce contemporary theatre. The University Playhouse’s performance of Acting: The First Six Lessons expressed this conglomeration of Greek and Elizabethan conventions through elements of presentational theatre, a non-localized set, and a supporting cast that functioned similar to a chorus or ensemble. This performance also altered conventions through the addition of female actors, use of representational aspects, adaption of the functions of the chorus or ensemble, and lack of a raised stage. In the following sections, I will discuss the adoption and adaptation…

William Shakespeare published “Romeo and Juliet” in 1597, a play of two lovers from rival houses who overcome hate to find love, only to have fate guide them to their deaths. Shakespeare bestowed upon the world a play with lively characters, and Juliet of the Capulets is a complex character who defies the typical stereotype of women during the Elizabethan era.
