The US fought for dominance over the Louisiana territory after Spain relinquished the land to France, granting them power to possibly found an empire from a small portion of Canada all the way to the Gulf Coast. American farmers were cheated after the French declared the New Orleans port off limits. Thomas Jefferson was worried that with France’s control over this large middle chunk of the US that American expansionism would be restrained and the frontier would disappear. With these dilemmas in mind and France struggling to overturn a slave rebellion and end a war with Great Britain, France was in agreement to sell the territory to the US, and the US was willing to pay fifteen million dollars in 1803 to ensure the continuation of the westward frontier. Without the frontier, the US would not be united in a democratic government, seen as a cultural hotspot, or an equipped industrialized nation. The Louisiana Purchase, war against Britain in 1812, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the annexation of Hawaii are occurrences that defined the American frontier, outlined Turner’s opinions, and brought people together to build settlements and create jobs. America’s power and capabilities as a country grew exponentially as the frontier conquered lands from the east to the west coast, and today even though there is not a physical frontier, power and patriotism in the US increases
