The main characters here are; the Onceler, who is an entrepreneur looking for opportunity, and the Lorax, who is the speaker for the trees. In the beginning of the story, there is a boy who asks for the story of the Lorax. The Onceler tells about what happens. First, the Onceler notices a forest of truffula trees. He realizes that he can become rich by making these trees into “Thneeds” which is a clothing item that can turn into whatever you would like it to be. Dr. Seuss walks readers through the deterioration of the place. As readers turn the pages of the story, the pictures and words start from happy and vibrant, to dark and moody. In the beginning, Dr. Seuss wants to show the Onceler’s aftermath, and so he shows the dark scene of the boy walking to the Onceler’s house. Then, the setting immediately flashes back to the time before the Onceler started making Thneeds. The flashback shows what is now a barren town was once a magnificent forest studded with brightly colored, butterfly milk-scented Truffula Trees, a vibrant lake, and a lushness of creatures. After, when the Onceler started the mass murder of the Truffula Trees, the picture and the mood of the story started to tint gray.
