Analysis Of Tom Robinson In Chapter 19 To Kill A Mockingbird

Decent Essays
In chapter nineteen of To Kill a Mockingbird we finally get to hear Tom Robinson’s side of what happened that day. His story seems pretty realistic and genuine unlike the Ewell’s side of the story. It is also made known that Tom had been previously convicted of disorderly conduct, which Tom owns up to. With that said it is made known that he has nothing to hide and seems to be an honest man.
According to Tom, Mayella tried to come onto him after inviting him inside the house claiming that there was work to do in there. I do believe this because it is said that Mayella has no friends so with that in mind you might think she would be lonely; you might even consider Tom to be one of her friends since he about the only persons she is around besides

As I am reading the book, I will be predicting the case verdict. I believe that the case will be decided that Tom Robinson is innocent and that Mr. Ewell was bluffing. One major reason I believe the case will be decided in favor of the defendants because there was no evidence to support the rape that was accused by Tom Robinson. First off, he is a crippled human being because “his left arm was fully twelve inches shorter than his right arm “(Lee 248). He is also right-handed so it would be unlikely that he was able to rape Mayella Ewell with two uneven arms.…

Tom Robinson is an innocent man. He was accused of rape towards Mayella Ewell. The jury should have not found Tom Robinson guilty because Tom Robinson did not rape Mayella. Evidence shows Tom Robinson did not rape Mayella. When Tom was younger he got his left arm caught in a cotton gin so his left arm is 12 inches shorter than his right.…

He also un-buttoned his clothes to show Tom that this trial will be an “easy” one to win. Epically when Atticus is defending an honest man. I predict that the Ewell’s will lose the case, and after the trial is over Atticus will be questioned. I will be characterizing Tom Robinson from the chapters 16-24. First off I characterized Tom to be truthful.…

I am reading the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. In the chapters sixteen through chapter twenty-three, Scout, Jem and Dill watch the trial of Tom Robinson, who was accused of raping Bob Ewell’s eldest daughter. Atticus, the defendant of Tom Robinson, lost the trial and Tom was brought to prison, where he attempted to escape, but was shot and killed. Although Tom was innocent, and Atticus proved that he was in the trial, the fact that he was a black man outweighed the fact that Bob Ewell was the one that beat Mayella, the victim of the supposed rape and the evidential beating. In this journal, I will be characterizing Tom Robinson and analyzing why Bob Ewell lied about his daughter’s attack.…

The Trials of Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird and “The Scottsboro Boys” both deal with discrimination in the 1930’s where discrimination was formidable and a way of life. “The Scottsboro Boys” were nine black youths. The youths were accused of raping two white women Victoria Price and Ruby Bates who traveled with a few white companions. Despite the fact that there was little evidence, the boys were still convicted of the crimes. That is a very close similarity to the fictional trial of Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird.…

Anyone can see it wasn’t set up, it was a genuine compliment and true statement from Deas. Furthermore, Tom is only there to help. The book says he went to Mayella’s often to help her with household chores. He said many times that she had a lot of work and no one to help her with it so, with invitation, he would lend his sevices. Also, Tom is crippled in his left arm, however he works everyday.…

Seemed like every time I passed by yonder she’d have somethin’ for me to do— chopin’ kindlin’, totin’ water for her. She watered them red flowers every day— “ Tom told the courtroom. He later claims that Mayella grabbed him around the legs and proceeded by hugging and kissing him - leaving the crowd murmuring amongst themselves. According to Tom Mr Ewell saw them through the window, and began shouting vulgarities towards his daughter; including, “ I’ll kill ya.” He ends his testimony claiming he ran because he was scared due to his racial skin color, and stated that he felt bad for Mayella - which left Judge Taylor…

Why is it a sin to kill a mockingbird? In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, a mockingbird symbolizes innocence. According to Atticus, “It is a sin to kill a mockingbird” (Pg 119). Three examples of mockingbirds are, Mayella Ewell, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley.…

To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…

Clearly, Tom knows that in that case that he is the prey and the white people are the predator, ready to jump on him and kill him. However, he does not let that discourage him and he speaks the truth in the courthouse case. Those are some reasons of why he is an honest human being. Another characteristic that would describe Tom Robinson would be polite. When he was in the courthouse telling his side of the story, he used an appropriate level of English, which was astounding because usually black men did not go to school.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…

Tom Robinson represents a mockingbird through his innocence and selflessness. Tom states, during his trial over his accusation of rape, that he “only helped the girl to bust up a clothes dresser” and that he was “not paid for his services” because he refused to accept the payment she offered him (Lee 256). Tom was offered money for his work; however, he refused, proving that he is a generous and generous person. After Tom is accused of rape, he goes to prison and tries to escape. Consequently, he is shot on his attempt at escaping.…

Racism had made Robinson’s fate of dead inevitable. “Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed”. In the particular place and time, it was simply because Tom was black and Mayella was white. In the era of 1930s, the whites had overwhelming power over the blacks who were seldom protected by law. Although Atticus did a brilliant job to expose Bob Ewell and his daughter’s lies and convinced most people that Tom Robinson was closer to innocence than sin, and it took extra effort and time for the jury to make a verdict, the sentence was still guilty, due to the predominance of racist opinion at that time.…
