To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit organization that works to help those struggling with mental illnesses, such as depression, self-harm, addiction, and suicidal thoughts. I was twelve years old when I happened to come across this organization. I can’t remember the exact date or what I should’ve been doing at the time, but I was browsing through YouTube. I started by looking up lyric videos for my favorite band at the time: Mayday Parade. Several videos later, I saw a suggestion from a band I’d never heard of: Between the Trees. The song was titled “The Way She Feels”. It sounded interesting so I decided to give the song a chance. This song was one of the most powerful songs I’d ever heard. I learned that TWLOHA was an acronym for To Write Love on Her Arms. I also learned about the organization, what they stood for, and what they did. I quickly became very interested in helping in any way I could. I began by telling everyone I knew about To Write Love on Her Arms and how they could help this cause. Once I turned 16, I was able to join the street team, which worked to help spread the word about TWLOHA within local communities. I participated in a variety of fundraisers and other events to help the organization.
For 6 years I wrote the word “love” on my left wrist nearly every day. Most days it was in basic cursive written with a black Sharpie. Occasionally, I would ask my mom to write it for me, and she would write “love” in an elaborate script in a variety of colors. Two months after my eighteenth birthday I chose to get “love” tattooed on my wrist as a permanent reminder of this organization and how much it means to
