Atticus Being A Hero

In the book to kill a mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Atticus is given the job to stand up for a black man in court in the time of racism and segregation of people. This book also takes place in the south during the Jim Cow law times, when things where very different. In the videos that was watched about the laws it shows segregation between the blacks and whites. Meaning whites hated black and black had little to no rights. Tom Robinson in this story is convicted and accused of raping a white girl. Based on the color of his skin the odds of being proven innocent where slim to none. When Atticus first gets the case he starts to it very serious and tries to defend Tom with the full of his ability. When explaining to scout how he was going to try but also knew he had no chance of winning he says “in our courts, when it 's a white man 's word against a black man 's, the white man always wins.”(Lee 294) Atticus believes that everyone is equal and loves everyone the same. He is trying to set a good and far example for his kids by trying his best to help everyone he can and not contribute to the racism and diversity rules that the whites of the town seem to be abusing. This alters Scout’s idea of what kind of person she wants to be one day. She says she wants to be in “her father’s world” more then the “southern lady”. With Atticus standing up for the things he believes in and enforcing his morals he does a good thing for the black community in Maycomb and for his children’s

In order to give Scout and Jem more accurate and modern views about society, Atticus starts by showing them how to use the tool of empathy in everyday life. Atticus understands the feelings that the people of Maycomb have about his position on race, but he’s still kind and gracious to them because he understands that they each have varying degrees of suffering in their own lives; “Atticus would sweep off his hat, wave gallantly to her and say, ‘Good evening Mrs. Dubose! You look like a picture this evening’”(Lee, 115). Atticus knows quite clearly the opinions that Ms. Dubose has about his profession and on Tom’s trial, but he still takes the time to greet and to compliment her. This is because he also knows about her struggle with morphine addiction, and after putting himself into her shoes, he realizes that her insults are…

Judgement is indubitably the primary theme in “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Harper Lee is emphatic about the need for reconstruction of social consciousness in the uncompromising Deep South of the 1930’s. Judgement is indicated with several characters throughout the book, such as Miss Gates, Atticus Finch and Tom Robinson. Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem’s Father is one of the victims to judgement.…

After Atticus is assigned to defend Tom Robinson, an African American, Scout asks him why is he doing something people say he shouldn’t be doing. In his own words, “The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town…” (75). This shows that regardless if people think Atticus is doing the wrong thing, he still does it because it’s something a respectful man would do. He shows consideration for everybody.…

Being that, To Kill a Mockingbird, was written in the late 50 's and early 60 's, it completely reflects the state of its society in that time. The civil rights movement was going on, which highlights my future references to sex, race, equal rights and the surrounding environments of the characters in this book. Although, Harper Lee wrote “To Kill a Mockingbird” in the 50 ' and 60 's, the setting took place in the time of the great depression; between 1933 and 1935. This broke the boundaries of the environment, reputation, money, state of health, and knowing right from wrong. Scout and Jem, two of the main characters who were Caucasian, lived with their father, Atticus and their cook and sometimes mother figure, Calpurnia.…

“Simply because we were licked a hundred before we started is no reason for us not to try to win.” (101) says Atticus Finch, the main character in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man, accused of attacking a white woman. Set in Jim Crow Alabama, Atticus is making a decision many people in Maycomb do not understand- taking a stand for a black man. Even though Atticus knows he does not have a chance at winning Tom’s case, because of his character, it makes sense for him to defend Tom Robinson because, Atticus does what is right, he lives by the “Golden Rule”, and he wants to set a good example to Jem and Scout.…

“At any given moment, public opinion is a chaos of superstition, misinformation, and prejudice” (Gore Vidal). In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee suggests that innocent people are so often misunderstood. Growing up in the small southern town of Maycomb County, young Scout learns through her father, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view… until you climb into their skin and walk around in it.” (Harper Lee 30). This is exemplified through the numerous victims of injustices within Maycomb, such as Tom Robinson, Mayella Ewell, and the mysterious Boo Radley.…

"Character is doing the right thing when nobody's looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that's right is to get by, and the only thing that's wrong is to get caught", said JC Watts, an American politician. Yet many people seek opportunities to do what is right only when they think that someone else will view them favorably because of it; others conform to ideals they do not believe just so they can fit in with the group. A true hero is someone who always follows their morals, no matter what.…
