Analysis Of Thomas J. Dygard's The Backfield Package

The Backfield Package by Thomas J. Dygard is a fiction sports story about a football team that has a chance to win the Rend Lake Conference championship in back to back seasons. The story mainly focuses on four players Joe Mitchell the quarterback, Tracy Jackson a wide receiver, Coley Brewster a running back, and Lew Preston the fullback and where these players will decide to go to college to play football at.
The time that this story goes on is unknown, but I would assume that the time is sometime in the nineties or pretty close to there. The story takes place though in southern Illinois at a small high school named Hillcrest High. This story has many different types of tone sometimes it is playful and sometimes it is joyful, but the main ones are probably uncertain, nervous and serious. The protagonist in the story are Joe Mitchell the quarterback, Tracy Jackson a wide receiver, Coley Brewster a running back, and Lew Preston the fullback. The main protagonist though is definitely Joe Mitchell, and in the story you are in his view of the story pretty much the whole time. The antagonists of the story though are all of the high schools that Hillcrest plays against, the college choices that all of the friends have, and sometimes Joe Mitchell’s

At the mid-way point in the fourth quarter the score was fifteen to twenty one in favor of Hoytville. Hillcrest had the ball though, and everyone was sure that they would score. Finally Hillcrest got down to the goal line with only a minute left and no time outs. On first down they passed and it was incomplete, on second down Joe Mitchell ran and was stopped just short of the goal line and the out of bounds line. Now Hillcrest really had to hurry, because there was only seconds left. All of them got to the line Joe Mitchell called the play from the line and right before he was about to snap it time ran out and they lost the game. Everybody was
