In Zora Neale Hurston’s novel “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, Janie Mae Crawford is a woman who is trying to find true love, nevertheless she is having difficulty finding her own identity. It takes her three marriages to find her identity and true love. Each marriage was a part of Janie’s journey to define herself. Janie realizes that she has developed into a strong woman, after each marriage helped shape her into the woman she hoped to be. All Janie wants is to find inner peace with herself and to find her true love. As Janie grows up to be a young woman, Nanny sets her with certain expectations of what love and marriage should be. Her first husband, Logan Killicks was a marriage arranged by Janie’s Nanny. In the beginning, Janie believes that marriage means love, however Nanny told her this. Before Janie married Logan, she listened to everything Nanny told her. In Janie’s first marriage she discovers that marriage does not mean love. Their relationship is the truest and he shows her what love really is. Janie has so much more freedom and she is not only in a relationship with Tea Cake, but she is in a relationship with herself. Her relationship with Tea Cake is the healthiest and all her lessons and experiences from her previous marriages come together in her relationship with Tea Cake. All Janie wants is to love, laugh and be free and she does that with Tea Cake. Tea Cake let Janie speak her mind and do what she wanted. ” Tea Cake loves Janie so much that he cannot stay away from her all day, even while at work. When Janie sees that it is interrupting his work schedule, she agrees to go out into the fields and work all day beside him just to be in his company.” This quote shows how much love Janie has for Tea Cake and how their relationship worked out really
